Software Engineering Intern
Lean Technologies
Job description
Role Overview
Software Engineering Intern at Lean Technologies. The internship is based in the Middle East (MENA region) and is designed as a path into a full-time engineering role at Lean.
Company Overview
Lean is the leading financial infrastructure provider in the Middle East, powering payments, account verification, financial data access, and other critical financial infrastructure across the region. The company operates as a regulated Open Banking and Open Finance entity across the UAE and Saudi Arabia, serving 350+ clients including Tabby, Tas'heel, Hungerstation, Binance, Careem, and Etisalat. Lean has processed billions of dollars in transactions, is backed by General Catalyst, Sequoia, and Shorooq, and raised $67.5M in Series B funding. The company is expanding into new markets, launching new products, and building capabilities that did not previously exist in the region.
Role Purpose
You will ship real enhancements to the infrastructure that Lean's clients use to move money and access financial data. Your production code, reviewed by experienced engineers, will be used directly by clients. You will work across Java Spring Boot services running on Kubernetes, with AI-assisted development as a central part of the workflow.
Key Responsibilities
Development & Delivery
- Design, develop, test, and debug software enhancements from ticket to production with your mentor reviewing your work.
- Use agentic coding tools (Claude Code) to raise both the quality and velocity of your work.
- Help the team build good patterns for using agentic coding tools effectively.
- Learn the team's tools, languages, and workflows fast enough to ship something in your first few weeks.
Code Quality & Collaboration
- Take part in code reviews on both sides: act on feedback on your code and give considered feedback on others'.
- Flag early when something you own is at risk of slipping.
Knowledge & Engagement
- Build a working understanding of the team's clients, their end-users, and the regulated environment Lean operates in.
- Join stand-ups, planning, and reviews.
- Get involved beyond your team: company events, demos, and cross-team work.
Qualifications & Experience
- Final-year student or graduate within the last 12 months in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- Hands-on experience using agentic coding tools as a core part of your workflow (specifically Claude Code), with the judgment to know when to trust their output and when to scrutinize it more closely.
- Working proficiency in at least one language such as Java, C++, Python, or similar.
- A grasp of the fundamentals: version control, testing, and debugging.
- Something you have built outside coursework: a side project, hackathon entry, open-source contribution, or previous internship.
Skills & Competencies
- Problem-solving you can articulate; ability to walk through how you broke a hard problem down.
- Clear written communication; ability to explain what you built and why you built it that way.
- Independence, plus the judgment to ask for help rather than stay stuck.
Additional Information
- You will have a dedicated mentor, along with your team and manager, to set and track development goals with you.
- AI-assisted development is central to how Lean works; Claude Code is part of the standard toolchain, and a generous near-unlimited usage quota is provided.
- Engineers at every level are expected to be fluent with agentic coding tools, using them to move faster while staying firmly in control of what ships.
- Competitive salaries, private healthcare, and flexible office hours are offered.
- Every member of the team holds a meaningful equity stake in the business to ensure long-term alignment.
- Lean is an equal opportunity workplace and affirmative action employer, committed to equal employment opportunity regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity, or Veteran status.
