Lactation Consultant

Role Overview

Lactation Consultant at NMC Healthcare. This role provides professional breastfeeding and infant-feeding support to mothers and families before and after delivery.

Role Purpose

Assess breastfeeding challenges, develop individualized feeding plans, educate parents, and support successful breastfeeding while promoting the health and well-being of both mother and baby.

Key Responsibilities

Assessment & Evaluation

• Assess mothers and infants to identify breastfeeding and lactation concerns.
• Monitor feeding progress, infant weight gain, and breastfeeding effectiveness.

Clinical Support & Education

• Provide one-on-one breastfeeding consultations and practical support.
• Assist mothers with proper positioning, latching, and breastfeeding techniques.
• Educate mothers and families about breastfeeding, milk expression, storage, and safe infant feeding practices.
• Support mothers experiencing common lactation challenges, including low milk supply, engorgement, sore or cracked nipples, and ineffective latch.
• Provide guidance on breast pumps and appropriate milk-expression techniques.

Care Planning & Documentation

• Develop individualized lactation care plans based on the mother's and infant's needs.
• Maintain accurate and confidential patient records and consultation documentation.

Collaboration & Community

• Collaborate with physicians, nurses, midwives, pediatricians, and other healthcare professionals when additional care is required.
• Provide emotional support and encouragement to mothers and families.
• Participate in breastfeeding education programs, antenatal classes, and community awareness activities.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor's or Diploma in Nursing, Midwifery, Nutrition, or a related healthcare field.
• Knowledge of breastfeeding techniques, infant feeding, breast pumps, and milk expression and storage.
