Chief Engineer

Role Overview

Chief Engineer at Marriott International. This role manages all engineering and maintenance operations at a hotel property, overseeing building, grounds, and physical plant with emphasis on safety, security, and asset protection.

Role Purpose

Manage all engineering and maintenance operations while maintaining regulatory compliance, controlling departmental budget and capital expenditure projects, implementing preventative maintenance and energy conservation programs, and leading the emergency response team for all facility issues.

Key Responsibilities

Operations & Physical Plant Management

• Supervise Engineering in the absence of the Director of Engineering.
• Supervise day-to-day operations of Engineering.
• Manage the physical plant including equipment, refrigeration, HVAC, plumbing, water treatment, electrical and life safety systems.
• Maintain and operate equipment at optimum effectiveness, efficiency and safety.
• Establish and manage an effective rooms maintenance program.
• Inspect and evaluate the physical condition of facilities to determine the type of work required.
• Recommend or arrange for additional services such as painting, repair work, renovations, and the replacement of furnishings and equipment.
• Select and order or purchase new equipment, supplies, and furnishings.

Budget & Financial Management

• Manage the department's controllable expenses to achieve or exceed budgeted goals.
• Manage capital expenditure projects.

Compliance & Standards

• Ensure compliance with all Engineering departmental policies, standards and procedures.
• Help establish priorities for total property maintenance needs.
• Maintain accurate logs and records as required.
• Assist in effectively planning, scheduling and evaluating preventative maintenance programs.
• Help ensure regulatory compliance to facility regulations and safety standards.

Customer Service & Guest Relations

• Handle guest problems and complaints effectively.
• Empower employees to provide excellent customer service.
• Display leadership in guest hospitality by exemplifying excellent customer service and creating a positive atmosphere for guest relations.

Human Resources & Team Leadership

• Celebrate successes and publicly recognize the contributions of team members.
• Establish and maintain open, collaborative relationships with employees.
• Ensure employees are treated fairly and equitably.
• Strive to improve service performance.
• Provide feedback to employees based on observation of service behaviors.
• Supervise employee's ability to execute departmental and property emergency procedures.
• Review employee satisfaction results to identify and address employee problems or concerns.
• Solicit employee feedback.
• Ensure disciplinary procedures and documentation are completed according to Standard and Local Operating Procedures (SOPs and LSOPs) and support the Peer Review Process.
• Ensure property policies are administered fairly and consistently.

Communication & Business Awareness

• Ensure on-going communication occurs in all areas of responsibility to create awareness of business objectives, awareness of expectations and recognition of exemplary performance.

Qualifications & Experience

• High school diploma or GED with 4 years of experience in engineering and maintenance or related professional area; OR
• 2-year degree from an accredited university in Building and Construction, Engineering, Mechanics, or related major with 2 years of experience in engineering and maintenance or related professional area.
• Technical training in HVAC-R, electrical, or plumbing.
