Here's an uncomfortable truth: most CVs are rejected before a human being ever reads them. In 2025, the majority of companies in the GCC — particularly banks, large corporates, and government entities — use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to filter applications automatically. If your CV doesn't pass the algorithm, it never reaches a recruiter's desk.

  • 75%

The good news? Once you understand how ATS works, you can write a CV that sails through it and lands in the "yes" pile.

What Is an ATS and How Does It Work?

An ATS is software that scans your CV for keywords, formatting patterns, and relevant experience. It scores your application against the job description and filters out candidates who fall below a threshold — often 70% or higher.

In the GCC, leading employers like Emirates NBD, ADNOC, Saudi Aramco, and government ministries all use ATS platforms. If you're applying online, assume your CV will be scanned.

💡 Key insight: ATS systems don't read PDFs the same way humans do. Tables, columns, graphics and fancy fonts can confuse the software and cause your CV to be rejected even if you're perfectly qualified.

The 7 Rules of an ATS-Optimised CV

1. Use a simple, clean format

Avoid tables, columns, text boxes, headers/footers, and graphics. Use a single-column layout with standard fonts like Arial, Calibri or Times New Roman. The simpler, the better.

2. Mirror the job description's language

ATS systems match your CV against the specific keywords in the job posting. If the job says "financial modelling" and your CV says "financial analysis", you may not match. Read the job description carefully and use the exact same terminology.

3. Include a strong Professional Summary

The first 3-4 lines of your CV carry significant weight. Include your job title, years of experience, and 2-3 key skills that match the role. For example: "Senior Relationship Manager with 10+ years in corporate banking across UAE and KSA, specialising in credit analysis, portfolio management and client acquisition."

4. Quantify your achievements

ATS systems and human recruiters both respond to numbers. Replace vague statements with specific results:

  • ❌ "Managed a team" → ✅ "Led a team of 12 relationship managers"
  • ❌ "Grew the portfolio" → ✅ "Grew the loan portfolio by AED 340M over 3 years"
  • ❌ "Improved customer satisfaction" → ✅ "Increased NPS score from 42 to 68 within 18 months"

5. Use standard section headings

Stick to conventional headings: Professional Summary, Work Experience, Education, Skills, Certifications. Creative headings like "My Journey" or "What I Bring" will confuse ATS systems.

6. Save as .docx (not .pdf) unless specified

While PDF looks cleaner, many ATS systems parse Word documents more accurately. Unless the job posting specifically requests PDF, submit a .docx file.

7. Include a Skills section with industry keywords

For banking and finance roles in the GCC, include keywords such as: KYC, AML, SWIFT, Basel III, credit risk, trade finance, Islamic banking, IFRS, SAP, Bloomberg. For technology: Python, cloud computing, DevOps, Agile, cybersecurity. Match these to the role you're applying for.

Your CV isn't a biography — it's a marketing document. Every word should answer one question: why are you the right person for this specific role?

GCC-Specific CV Tips

  • Include your nationality — it's standard and expected on GCC CVs
  • Add your visa status — employers want to know if you need sponsorship
  • Languages matter — Arabic fluency is a significant advantage for many roles
  • Keep it to 2 pages maximum — GCC recruiters prefer concise CVs
  • Include a professional photo — unlike Western markets, photos are expected
