Role Overview

Technologist II - Pathology Sciences at Sidra Medicine. This position is restricted to Qatari Nationals. Location: Doha, Qatar.

Sidra Medicine is a tertiary healthcare organization operating under CAP and JCI standards.

Role Purpose

To assist in the commissioning of pathology sections while performing pre-batching, pooling, and processing of human donor samples for PCR testing. The role provides operational oversight of a team within the department and delivers high-quality services as part of a biomedical sciences team.

Key Responsibilities

Commissioning and Setup

• Lead commissioning of equipment, IT systems, and relevant sections.
• Assist in recruitment, onboarding and training of staff.
• Prepare policies and procedures in accordance with CAP and JCI standards.

Team Leadership and Supervision

• Organize, supervise and participate in the work of the section.
• Actively supervise other staff within the section to ensure efficient throughput of work as directed by the Supervisor.
• Lead by example to motivate staff to create high-quality work and foster interest and contribution.
• Assist the Supervisor in implementation of management decisions affecting the sections.

Technical Operations

• Perform all aspects of PCR pre-batching, pooling, processing, test result entry, equipment maintenance and sample management functions to ensure accuracy and timely reporting.
• Perform routine and non-routine analyses of DNA according to established testing methods and protocols in a high throughput environment.
• Actively participate in the technical work of the section.
• Take responsibility for the maintenance and safe use of equipment within the section.
• Monitor and advise on the use of reagents and consumables in the section.
• Ensure the integrity of analytical data and timely, accurate interpretation of results, updating company databases.

Quality Assurance and Compliance

• Review batching and pooling documents, quality control and other reports for accuracy, completeness and compliance to requirements.
• Monitor quality of critical testing equipment, performing calibrations, verifications and maintenance of systems as necessary.
• Document out-of-tolerance occurrences and take corrective actions as per the laboratory's quality management systems.
• Ensure work is performed to the highest standards of safety and quality.
• Ensure the working environment is clean and tidy.

Stakeholder Communication

• Answer enquiries and communicate patient results to clinicians, surgeons and nursing staff both internally and external to Sidra.
• Provide specialist technical advice on specimen handling to clinicians, surgeons and nursing staff.
• Maintain cooperation between the section and disciplines by regular liaison with other section leads and senior staff.
• Attend staff meetings.
• Communicate with Lab Coordinator and stakeholders regarding identified laboratory processes or quality issues.

Resource and Technology Management

• Ensure adequate stocks of reagents and consumables are available for efficient running of the service in liaison with the Supervisor.
• Provide technical advice on and assist in the selection of new equipment in liaison with the Supervisor.
• Use LIS to generate workload statistics and run queries.
• Utilize laboratory data handling systems to document, communicate and archive results.

Continuous Improvement

• Participate in operational excellence initiatives and projects to drive a culture of continuous improvement.
• Facilitate improvements to processes and methodologies where appropriate.
• Contribute to value creation by continuous improvement of procedures in analytical work processes and related tools and performance metrics.
• Network with other technical experts to leverage problem-solving and prevention expertise and share technology where appropriate.
• Proactively develop and expand knowledge and experience of other analytical techniques.

Scheduling and Coordination

• Assist in organization and scheduling of analytical activities to ensure service requests are accurately run within allotted time and testing priorities are met.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

• Bachelor's degree in lab-based Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biology or other biological science field.

Professional Experience

• 5+ years of experience working with advanced analytical lab equipment including liquid handlers, automatic pipettes and plate readers.
• Experience in LIS operations.
• Experience in team management.
• Experience in evaluating new technologies.

Certification and Licensure

• License in the country of origin or country of practice.
• Meets licensing requirements of the State of Qatar.

Skills & Competencies

• Knowledge of ISO 15189/CPA/CAP/JCI standards and guidelines.
• Demonstrated ability in conducting meetings and making presentations.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a detail-oriented manner.
• Great attention to detail and carefulness.
• Flexibility in managing schedules.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.

Additional Information

• Works unsupervised but under the direction of the Supervisor - Pathology Sciences.
• In view of evolving needs and opportunities within Sidra, this position may be required to perform other duties as assigned and reporting relationships may vary.
