Role Overview

Technologist I - BMT/XM and Blood Issue at Sidra Medicine in Qatar. Working with the Supervisor - Blood Transfusion and the Technologist II, this role assists in the validation of all equipment and processes within the laboratory, preparation of policies and procedures in accordance with CAP/ISO15189 and JCI, and training of staff in specific techniques as appropriate.

Role Purpose

The Technologist I - XM and Blood Issue performs a broad range of technical and analytical work with a high level of individual skill and judgment, under minimal supervision, delivering high-quality laboratory services as part of a 24/7 team of Biomedical Scientists and Technologists. The role requires observation and maintenance of high standards of laboratory health, safety, and risk procedures while working to departmental Standard Operating Procedures and current professional standards.

Key Responsibilities

Technical and Analytical Work

• Actively participate in the technical and analytical work of the section.
• Determine acceptability of specimens and blood or blood components.
• Perform laboratory tests and communicate critical results in accordance with laboratory policy for assigned section.
• Obtain and record results for laboratory tests according to established procedures within established TAT as delegated by the Chair of Pathology.
• Recognize normal, abnormal, and critical test results.
• Differentiate and resolve instrument and unexpected test results.
• Perform any assigned tasks by supervisor or Technologist II.

Equipment Management and Maintenance

• Take responsibility for the maintenance and safe use of equipment within the section.
• Operate and perform all required preventive maintenance of equipment according to written procedures and documents.
• Report equipment malfunctions and request service as necessary.
• Provide technical advice on, and assist in the selection and validation of new equipment in liaison with the Technologist II and Supervisor - Blood Transfusion.

Quality Assurance and Compliance

• Help ensure the provision of a high-quality, cost-effective service with emphasis on quality assurance in all aspects of the section through monitoring and audit of internal quality control.
• Initiate, perform, review, and troubleshoot quality control of reagents and test systems.
• Participate in the external quality assurance schemes that the department subscribes to.
• Carry out corrective action as advised when quality control procedures fail.
• Assist in ensuring achievement of and maintaining CAP and ISO15189 standards in the section.
• Ensure policies and procedures for the sections are acknowledged within a timely manner and are adhered to.
• Ensure that work is carried out in accordance with departmental policies.
• Understand and adhere to process improvement principles and processes, including following standard work and maintaining a robust inventory concept in work area.

Data Management and Reporting

• Use LIS to generate workload statistics and run queries.
• Assess quality of data according to defined criteria.
• Monitor, record, and report back results.
• Participate in discussions to rectify areas of concern if necessary.

Collaboration and Communication

• Liaise with Technologist II and Supervisor - Blood Transfusion on appropriateness of tests, results, and additional testing as required.
• Maintain cooperation between sections and between disciplines through regular communication with other Technologist I grade and Senior staff.
• In liaison with the Technologist II and Supervisor - Blood Transfusion, ensure adequate stocks of reagents and consumables are available for the efficient running of the service.
• Communicate with physicians, nurses, or other requestors by telephone, computer, or other method that ensures confidentiality.
• Respect and relate well to people from varied backgrounds, diverse world views, and demonstrate sensitivity to group differences.

Training and Professional Development

• Participate in the training (theoretical and practical) of technical staff in methodologies, principles, and procedures by way of tutorials, presentations, and seminars.
• Participate in the implementation of new methodologies under the direction of the Technologist II and Supervisor - Blood Transfusion.
• Be actively involved in the laboratory's continuing professional development program.
• Prepare and deliver presentations to a range of staff.
• Attend internal and external lectures.
• Undertake additional training courses as required.

Research and Competency

• Participate in research and development as directed by the Technologist II and Supervisor - Blood Transfusion.
• Maintain all clinical competencies required in section.
• Perform in accordance with laboratory policy to provide accurate test results, slides, photographs, and documents.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

• Bachelor's degree in Biological Science, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Medical Technology, or other relevant program.

Experience

• 2+ years of relevant experience.
• No minimum experience requirement for Qatar University or UDST graduates only.

Certification and Licensure

• Meets the requirement for licensure by State of Qatar Department of Healthcare Professions (DHP) Ministry of Public Health (MOPH), which includes a Prometric exam.
• Licensed and/or certified by an accredited licensure body in the home country.

Professional Membership

• Participation in Continual Professional Development/Education.

Skills & Competencies

Technical Skills

• Competent in broad range of technical processes in the general laboratory.
• Competent in all sections of the Blood Transfusion.
• Knowledge and understanding of ISO15189/CPA/CAP/JCI standards and guidelines.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.

Soft Skills and Abilities

• Able to work as part of team, but also independently with minimal supervision.
• Ability to work under pressure.
• Excellent communication skills both written and oral.
• Fluency in written and spoken English.

Additional Information

• Required to participate in 24/7 service provision of the laboratory, including weekends and holidays.
• In view of evolving needs and opportunities within Sidra, this position may be required to perform other duties as assigned and reporting relationships may vary.
