Role Overview
Staff Nurse - Medical & Surgical (STMC) at SEHA, providing safe, patient-centered nursing care in a medical and surgical setting.
Role Purpose
Deliver age-appropriate, evidence-based patient care in accordance with nursing scope of practice and organizational policy. Supervise and mentor junior staff, support quality improvement and patient safety initiatives, and ensure compliance with professional and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Practice
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care in accordance with organizational policy, procedures and unit scope of service.
- Assume accountability and responsibility for own practice and do not carry out tasks beyond level of competence.
- Utilize evidence-based practice in the provision of care.
- Coordinate individualized care from point of first contact throughout the episode of care, incorporating discharge planning in the plan of care.
- Identify significant changes in patient conditions, initiate appropriate action and report to immediate supervisor or physician as appropriate.
- Prioritize patient care based on ongoing assessment of patient needs.
- Participate in the referral process and utilize available resources for the provision of comprehensive care to patients and families as per organizational policy.
- Demonstrate service excellence and act as a patient advocate to support the patient's rights and dignity at all times.
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to provide patient and family-centered care.
- Administer medications according to organization policies and procedures.
- Understand actions of medication and contraindications, evaluate patient's response and identify side effects and initiate appropriate action.
- Practice within the Ministry of Health and HA-AD Narcotic Policies and Procedures.
- Report Adverse Drug Reactions and Medication errors in accordance with organization policy.
- Respond to all levels of emergencies according to the organization's policies and procedures.
- Demonstrate working knowledge of resource consumption and practices within a cost-effective framework.
- Facilitate a climate of mutual understanding and appreciation of cross-cultural differences inherent in a multicultural society.

- Supervise practical nurses, practical midwives, junior staff and student nurses to ensure the provision of safe and effective patient care.
- Act as a preceptor to new staff as required.
- Perform in-charge duties as delegated.
- Promote a suitable learning environment for staff, act as mentor and preceptor as needed.
- Supervise and teach other staff as needed.
Communication & Documentation
- Maintain confidentiality and security of patient, family and organizational information in accordance with confidentiality policy.
- Maintain responsibility for documentation and participate in the use of information technology and relevant electronic medical records.
- Facilitate effective communication between the patient, family and the interdisciplinary healthcare team as required.
- Liaise with other healthcare providers as necessary to ensure appropriate and timely interventions for patients and discharge planning.
- Actively participate in meetings, rounds and case conferences in the role of primary nurse.
- Provide comprehensive clinical handover and reports as required to ensure patient safety.
- Ensure that nursing documentation is compliant with organization policies and procedures.
- Ensure documentation reflects a continuous, systematic and accurate nursing assessment of all patient care events.
- Establish and maintain professional boundaries with patients and members of the healthcare team.
Patient Safety & Risk Management
- Actively contribute to the organization's culture of patient safety.
- Ensure provision of a clean and safe working environment that minimizes risks to patient, visitors, other staff and self.
- Identify faulty or defective equipment or furniture, remove from service and report to immediate supervisor for action.
- Comply with International and HAAD patient safety goals.
- Actively promote and comply with the organization's Infection Control policies and procedures.
- Identify, manage and report incidents to immediate supervisor and to physician as required.
- Complete appropriate documentation according to organization policy.
- Participate in quality improvement activities by assisting with the development of standards, implementation and review of policies, procedures and guidelines.
- Evaluate indicators and report outcomes and trends.
- Monitor and assist in evaluating unit operation and services in order to correct problems, improve systems and ensure safe patient care.
- Participate in interdisciplinary teams and Performance Improvement Projects for the evaluation and improvement of processes and clinical practice.
Education & Health Promotion
- Assess patient and family education needs, plan for and provide education and evaluate outcome.
- Provide a suitable environment that supports patient and family learning.
- Ensure patient and family are provided with comprehensive information and resources to meet their healthcare needs.
- Engage in health promotion activities in the healthcare organization and community.
Professional Development
- Complete mandatory and unit-specific competencies and demonstrate ongoing competence.
- In conjunction with the Manager, Charge Nurse or CRN, identify own professional learning needs and develop an annual learning plan.
- Demonstrate improvement in clinical practice as a result of application of new theoretical knowledge.
- Initiate or participate in Nursing and other disciplines research that contributes to continual improvement in standards of care.
- Develop and maintain own Professional Portfolio as per HA-AD policy.
- Obtain accredited and non-accredited Continuing Nursing Education Units in compliance with HA-AD and the organization's requirements.
Organizational Compliance
- Understand, support and promote the mission, vision and values of the organization.
- Adhere to and promote the Professional Nurses Code of Conduct for Abu Dhabi.
- Promote health and delivery of health education.
- Contribute to the wider corporate and organizational development needs as appropriate within scope of practice.
- Ensure compliance with the requirements of the Health and Safety regulations of the hospital.
- Uphold the organization's customer service standards at all times.
Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum 2 years clinical experience post qualification in an appropriate setting (experience requirement waived for graduates of UAE nursing colleges and universities after completion of internship).
