Role Overview
Staff Nurse - General Medicine Clinic at Ghayathi Hospital, SEHA.
Role Purpose
Provide age-appropriate patient care according to the Nursing Scope of Practice as defined by the regulatory body, while promoting the mission, vision and values of the organization. Deliver comprehensive clinical care, health education, and patient advocacy within a collaborative, safety-focused healthcare environment.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Practice
- Conduct assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care in accordance with organizational policy, procedures and unit scope of service.
- Assume accountability and responsibility for own practice and do not carry out tasks beyond level of competence.
- Utilize evidence-based practice in the provision of care.
- Coordinate individualized care from point of first contact throughout the episode of care, incorporating discharge planning in the plan of care.
- Identify significant changes in patient conditions, initiate appropriate action and report to immediate supervisor or physician as appropriate.
- Prioritize patient care based on ongoing assessment of patient needs.
- Participate in the referral process and utilize available resources for the provision of comprehensive care to patients and families as per organizational policy.
- Demonstrate service excellence and act as a patient advocate to support the patient's rights and dignity at all times.
- Facilitate a climate of mutual understanding and appreciation of cross-cultural differences inherent in a multicultural society.
- Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to provide patient and family-centered care.
- Administer medications according to organization policies and procedures, understand actions of medication and contraindications, evaluate patient's response and identify side effects and initiate appropriate action.
- Practice within the Ministry of Health and HA-AD Narcotic Policies and Procedures.
- Report Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) and Medication errors in accordance with organization policy.
- Respond to all levels of emergencies according to the organization's policies and procedures.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of resource consumption and practice within a cost-effective framework.
Leadership & Supervision
- Demonstrate a professional commitment to patients and fellow healthcare professionals.
- Demonstrate sound critical thinking, conflict management and problem-solving ability.
- Promote and support a collaborative practice model.
- Promote an interdisciplinary team approach based on mutual respect and direct communication between health professionals.
- Participate in annual performance reviews of self and others.
- Act as role model and mentor to fellow nursing staff.
- Actively participate in organizational change in a constructive manner.
- Supervise practical nurses, practical midwives, junior staff and student nurses to ensure the provision of safe and effective patient care.
- Act as a preceptor to new staff as required.
- Perform in-charge duties as delegated.
Communication & Documentation
- Maintain confidentiality and security of patient, family and organizational information in accordance with the confidentiality policy.
- Take responsibility for documentation and participate in the use of information technology and relevant electronic medical records.
- Facilitate effective communication between the patient, family and the interdisciplinary healthcare team as required.
- Liaise with other healthcare providers as necessary to ensure appropriate and timely interventions for patients and for discharge planning.
- Actively participate in meetings, rounds and case conferences in the role of primary nurse.
- Provide comprehensive clinical handover and reports as required to ensure patient safety.
- Ensure that nursing documentation is compliant with organization policies and procedures.
- Ensure documentation reflects a continuous, systematic and accurate nursing assessment of all patient care events.
- Establish and maintain professional boundaries with patients and members of the healthcare team.
Performance Improvement & Risk Management
- Participate in quality improvement activities by assisting with the development of standards, implementation and review of policies, procedures, guidelines, evaluation of indicators and reporting of outcomes and trends.
- Monitor and assist in evaluating unit operation and services in order to correct problems, improve systems and ensure safe patient care.
- Participate in interdisciplinary teams and Performance Improvement Projects for the evaluation and improvement of processes and clinical practice.
- Actively contribute to the organization's culture of patient safety.
- Ensure provision of a clean and safe working environment that minimizes risks to patient, visitors, other staff and self.
- Identify faulty or defective equipment or furniture, remove from service and report to immediate supervisor for action.
- Comply with International and HAAD patient safety goals.
- Actively promote and comply with the organization's Infection Control policies and procedures.
- Identify, manage and report incidents to immediate supervisor and to physician as required, and complete appropriate documentation according to organization policy.
Education & Health Promotion
- Assess patient and family education needs, plan for and provide education and evaluate outcome.
- Provide a suitable environment that supports patient and family learning.
- Ensure patient and family are provided with comprehensive information and resources to meet their healthcare needs.
- Engage in health promotion activities in the healthcare organization and community.
Professional Development
- Promote a suitable learning environment for staff, act as mentor or preceptor as needed.
- Supervise and teach other staff as needed.
- Complete mandatory and unit-specific competencies and demonstrate ongoing competence.
- In conjunction with the Manager, Charge Nurse or CRN, identify own professional learning needs and develop an annual learning plan.
- Demonstrate improvement in clinical practice as a result of application of new theoretical knowledge.
- Initiate or participate in Nursing and other disciplines research that contributes to continual improvement in standards of care.
- Develop and maintain own Professional Portfolio as per HA-AD policy.
- Obtain accredited and non-accredited Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) Units in compliance with HA-AD and the organization's requirements.
General Responsibilities

- Adhere to and promote the Professional Nurses Code of Conduct for Abu Dhabi.
- Uphold the organization's customer service standards at all times.
- Ensure compliance with the requirements of the Health and Safety regulations of the hospital.
- Contribute to the wider corporate and organizational development needs as appropriate within scope of practice.
Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum 2 years clinical experience post-qualification in appropriate setting.
- Note: Experience requirement waived for graduates of UAE nursing colleges or universities after completion of internship.
