Role Purpose

To provide safe, age-appropriate, evidence-based patient care in accordance with organizational policies and the Professional Nurses Code of Conduct for Abu Dhabi, while supporting the mission, vision and values of the organization.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Supervision

• Demonstrate professional commitment to patients and fellow healthcare professionals.
• Act as role model and mentor to fellow nursing staff.
• Supervise practical nurses, practical midwives, junior staff and student nurses to ensure safe and effective patient care.
• Act as preceptor to new staff as required.
• Perform in-charge duties as delegated.
• Actively participate in organizational change in a constructive manner.
• Demonstrate sound critical thinking, conflict management and problem-solving ability.

Clinical Practice

• Conduct assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care in accordance with organization policy and procedures and unit scope of service.
• Assume accountability and responsibility for own practice and not carry out tasks beyond level of competence.
• Utilize evidence-based practice in the provision of care.
• Coordinate individualized care from point of first contact throughout the episode of care, incorporating discharge planning.
• Identify significant changes in patient condition, initiate appropriate action and report to immediate supervisor or physician as appropriate.
• Prioritize patient care based on ongoing assessment of patient needs.
• Participate in the referral process and utilize available resources for comprehensive care to patients and families.
• Demonstrate service excellence and act as patient advocate to support patient rights and dignity at all times.
• Facilitate a climate of mutual understanding and appreciation of cross-cultural differences inherent in a multicultural society.
• Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to provide patient and family-centered care.
• Administer medications according to organization policies and procedures, understand medication actions and contraindications, evaluate patient response and identify side effects.
• Practice within the Ministry of Health and HA-AD Narcotic Policies and Procedures.
• Report Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) and medication errors in accordance with organization policy.
• Respond to all levels of emergencies according to organization policies and procedures.
• Demonstrate working knowledge of resource consumption and practice within a cost-effective framework.

Communication & Documentation

• Maintain confidentiality and security of patient, family and organizational information in accordance with confidentiality policy.
• Maintain responsibility for documentation and participate in the use of information technology and relevant electronic medical records.
• Facilitate effective communication between patient, family and interdisciplinary healthcare team as required.
• Liaise with other healthcare providers as necessary to ensure appropriate and timely interventions for patients and discharge planning.
• Actively participate in meetings, rounds and case conferences in the role of primary nurse.
• Provide comprehensive clinical handover and reports as required to ensure patient safety.
• Ensure nursing documentation is compliant with organization policies and procedures.
• Ensure documentation reflects continuous, systematic and accurate nursing assessment of all patient care events.
• Establish and maintain professional boundaries with patients and members of the healthcare team.

Performance Improvement & Risk Management

• Participate in quality improvement activities by assisting with development of standards, implementation and review of policies, procedures, guidelines, evaluation of indicators and reporting of outcomes and trends.
• Monitor and assist in evaluating unit operation and services to correct problems, improve systems and ensure safe patient care.
• Participate in interdisciplinary teams and Performance Improvement Projects for evaluation and improvement of processes and clinical practice.
• Actively contribute to the organization's culture of patient safety.
• Ensure provision of a clean and safe working environment that minimizes risks to patients, visitors, other staff and self.
• Identify faulty or defective equipment or furniture, remove from service and report to immediate supervisor for action.
• Comply with International and HAAD patient safety goals.
• Actively promote and comply with the organization's Infection Control policies and procedures.
• Identify, manage and report incidents to immediate supervisor and physician as required, completing appropriate documentation according to organization policy.

Patient & Family Education

• Assess patient and family education needs, plan for and provide education and evaluate outcome.
• Provide a suitable environment that supports patient and family learning.
• Ensure patient and family are provided with comprehensive information and resources to meet their healthcare needs.
• Engage in health promotion activities in the healthcare organization and community.

Professional Development

• Promote a suitable learning environment for staff; act as mentor or preceptor as needed.
• Supervise and teach other staff as needed.
• Complete mandatory and unit-specific competencies and demonstrate ongoing competence.
• Identify own professional learning needs in conjunction with the Manager, Charge Nurse or CRN and develop an annual learning plan.
• Demonstrate improvement in clinical practice as a result of application of new theoretical knowledge.
• Initiate or participate in nursing and other disciplines research that contributes to continual improvement in standards of care.
• Develop and maintain own Professional Portfolio as per HA-AD policy.
• Obtain accredited and non-accredited Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) units in compliance with HA-AD and organization requirements.

Qualifications & Experience

• Minimum 2 years of clinical experience post-qualification in an appropriate setting (experience requirement waived for graduates of UAE nursing colleges and universities after completion of internship).
