Staff Nurse-ADH-Medical & Surgical ICU (Madinat Zayed)

Role Overview

Staff Nurse-ADH-Medical & Surgical ICU located in Madinat Zayed, working for SEHA.

Role Purpose

To provide safe, effective, and age-appropriate patient care in the Medical & Surgical ICU setting, demonstrating professional commitment to patients and interdisciplinary collaboration while promoting organizational mission, vision and values in accordance with nursing scope of practice and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Practice

• Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care according to organizational policies, procedures and unit scope of service.
• Assume accountability and responsibility for own practice and do not carry out tasks beyond level of competence.
• Utilize evidence-based practice in the provision of care.
• Coordinate individualized care from point of first contact throughout the episode of care, incorporating discharge planning.
• Identify significant changes in patient conditions, initiate appropriate action and report to immediate supervisor or physician.
• Prioritize patient care based on ongoing assessment of patient needs.
• Participate in the referral process and utilize available resources for comprehensive care to patients and families.
• Demonstrate service excellence and act as patient advocate to support patient rights and dignity.
• Facilitate mutual understanding and appreciation of cross-cultural differences in a multicultural society.
• Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to provide patient and family-centered care.
• Administer medications according to organizational policies and procedures.
• Understand actions of medication and contraindications, evaluate patient response and identify side effects and initiate appropriate action.
• Practice within Ministry of Health and HA-AD Narcotic Policies and Procedures.
• Report Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) and medication errors in accordance with organizational policy.
• Respond to all levels of emergencies according to organizational policies and procedures.
• Demonstrate working knowledge of resource consumption and practice within a cost-effective framework.

• Supervise practical nurses, practical midwives, junior staff and student nurses to ensure safe and effective patient care.
• Act as preceptor to new staff as required.
• Perform in-charge duties as delegated.

Communication

• Maintain confidentiality and security of patient, family and organizational information in accordance with confidentiality policy.
• Document patient information and participate in use of information technology and electronic medical records.
• Facilitate effective communication between patient, family and interdisciplinary health care team.
• Liaise with other health care providers to ensure appropriate and timely interventions and discharge planning.
• Actively participate in meetings, rounds and case conferences in the role of primary nurse.
• Provide comprehensive clinical handover and reports to ensure patient safety.
• Ensure nursing documentation is compliant with organizational policies and procedures.
• Ensure documentation reflects continuous, systematic and accurate nursing assessment of all patient care events.
• Establish and maintain professional boundaries with patients and members of the health care team.

Performance Improvement & Risk Management

• Participate in quality improvement activities by assisting with development of standards, implementation and review of policies, procedures and guidelines.
• Evaluate indicators and report outcomes and trends.
• Monitor and assist in evaluating unit operation and services to correct problems, improve systems and ensure safe patient care.
• Participate in interdisciplinary teams and Performance Improvement Projects for evaluation and improvement of processes and clinical practice.
• Actively contribute to the organization's culture of patient safety.
• Ensure provision of a clean and safe working environment that minimizes risks to patients, visitors, other staff and self.
• Identify faulty or defective equipment or furniture, remove from service and report to immediate supervisor.
• Comply with International and HAAD patient safety goals.
• Actively promote and comply with the organization's Infection Control policies and procedures.
• Identify, manage and report incidents to immediate supervisor and physician as required.
• Complete appropriate documentation according to organizational policy.

Education

• Assess patient and family education needs, plan for and provide education and evaluate outcomes.
• Provide a suitable environment that supports patient and family learning.
• Ensure patients and families are provided with comprehensive information and resources to meet their health care needs.
• Engage in health promotion activities in the healthcare organization and community.
• Assess patient and family education needs related to health promotion.

Professional Development

• Promote a suitable learning environment for staff and act as mentor or preceptor as needed.
• Supervise and teach other staff as needed.
• Complete mandatory and unit-specific competencies and demonstrate ongoing competence.
• In conjunction with Manager, Charge Nurse or CRN, identify own professional learning needs and develop an annual learning plan.
• Demonstrate improvement in clinical practice through application of new theoretical knowledge.
• Initiate or participate in Nursing and other disciplines research that contributes to continual improvement in standards of care.
• Develop and maintain own Professional Portfolio per HA-AD policy.
• Obtain accredited and non-accredited Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) Units in compliance with HA-AD and organizational requirements.
• Understand and support the organization's mission, vision and values.
• Adhere to and promote the Professional Nurses Code of Conduct for Abu Dhabi.
• Promote health and delivery of health education.

General

• Contribute to wider corporate and organizational development needs as appropriate within scope of practice.
• Ensure compliance with Health and Safety regulations of the hospital.
• Uphold organizational customer service standards at all times.

Qualifications & Experience

• Minimum 2 years clinical experience post-qualification in appropriate setting (Note: Experience requirement waived for graduates of UAE nursing colleges and universities after completion of internship).
