Role Overview

Senior Dredge Master at NMDC Group. The role is based on a Cutter Suction Dredger (CSD) vessel operating worldwide on dredging projects.

Role Purpose

The Senior Dredge Master exercises overall command of the CSD's maintenance, operation, crew welfare, discipline and training to establish and sustain a high-productivity, efficient and safe working environment. The role carries ultimate responsibility for the safety and daily operation of the vessel and its crew in accordance with company procedures, international and national maritime law.

Key Responsibilities

Operations & Production

• Generate production reporting on each operation.
• Keep track of cubic meters pumped through the floating pipeline.
• Report daily production to and consult with the Project Manager and Project Team on operational activities and progress of assigned works.
• Optimize utilization and daily production of the CSD in accordance with its operational capabilities.
• Organize and supervise execution of dredging cutter suction works according to planning, budgeting and applied methods.
• Propose methods to increase production in collaboration with crew on board.

Maintenance & Technical Management

• Keep track of wear and tear (W&T) of all soil conveying parts including deck lines, impellers, inner/outer pump houses, sheaves and suction mouth using a register based on dredge material characteristics and pumped volume.
• Schedule and plan maintenance of CSD and auxiliary vessels in alignment with the project team.
• Implement the maintenance plan of CSD and auxiliary vessels in accordance with Technical Department objectives.
• Verify timely completion of maintenance on auxiliary equipment and CSD.
• Perform regular checks to ensure all equipment is safe for operations.
• Execute preventive maintenance and maintain a regular inspection schedule of W&T parts.
• Report all defects of vessels or auxiliary equipment to the Technical Department, Project Manager and Head Office.
• Provide input on possible upgrades, small and major modifications to improve reliability and production of the CSD.
• Propose methods to the Technical Department to increase technical reliability.

Crew Management, Training & Development

• Exercise overall control of crew welfare, discipline and training.
• Teach and guide crew on board in dredging techniques and planning of deck and engine room related activities.
• Supervise and guide activities related to the dredger.
• Assess crew and provide honest and detailed evaluations to Crewing, Operations and Technical departments.
• Motivate crew and communicate in a clear way.
• Teach, advise and guide crew on a daily basis to increase their understanding of dredging activities and achieve higher quality, safety, technical reliability, production and operational hours.

Planning & Coordination

• Provide input on day-to-day planning in agreement with the SDI/TSI.
• Advise the dredging superintendent on planning of the work process, cutting patterns and shore connections.
• Schedule personnel and auxiliary vessels on projects to perform works as planned.
• Coordinate with DSI/TSI/WM/PM on actions to safeguard the interests of the vessel and crew.
• Conduct pre-start meetings.

Quality & Environmental Compliance

• Ensure all tasks and controls related to quality as specified in the relevant project quality plan.
• Observe standards as to quality, safety and environmental care in all dredging operations.
• Execute work in accordance with local environmental prescriptions and regulations.
• Ensure assigned works are executed safely and without risk to health, quality and environment according to customer and company requirements.

Health, Safety & Incident Management

• Identify hazards.
• Obtain information from the HSE Department.
• Make recommendations to the HSE Department.
• Investigate incidents.
• Report all accidents, incidents and near misses to the Project Manager, HSE Manager and designated person.
• Report accidents and particular events.
• Execute ISM-management on board and arrange that all required drills and inspections are performed at required intervals.
• Ensure execution of safety committee on board.
• Propose methods to the HSE Department to increase safety on board.

Continuous Improvement

• Provide a lessons learned register and implement action points.
• Inform opportunities to improve to Operations Department and Technical Department.

General Authority & Responsibility

• Take all necessary decisions to carry out work safely, with care for the environment and with quality according to requirements.
• Exercise ultimate responsibility for safety and daily operation of CSD and crew as prescribed by company procedures and guidelines.
• Defend the company's policy and procedures.
• Have final word in regards to all activities on board the CSD including operations, planning, maintenance, deck department and engine department.
• Exercise authority in accordance with international and national laws in force in the situation or work area where the dredger lies.
• Have full power in coordination with DSI/TSI/WM/PM to take whatever action deemed best to safeguard the interests of the vessel and its crew.
• Accept generalist responsibility for assigned jobs and perform tasks beyond the scope of this role due to operational or technical requirements.

Qualifications & Experience

• Diploma or Degree or equivalent professional qualification and experience.
• Valid STCW Code certification including Basic and Manila amendments.
• Valid statutory license issued by flag authority for specific on-board job.
• Minimum 10 years of maritime experience, preferably worldwide.
• Minimum 7.5 years of experience on CSD with minimum 1500 KW cutter power.
• Proven experience on high-performance driven CSD in a leading role.
• Function-specific experience in dredging operations.
• Experience with ISM.
• Experience with Permit to Work (PTW).
• Experience with safety committee on board.
• Experience with pre-start meetings.
• Experience with preventive maintenance and regular inspection schedules of wear and tear parts.

Skills & Competencies

• Full understanding of the parts and working principle of CSD and their limitations.
• Proven understanding of dredging methodology in the use of pumps including Underwater Pump (UWP), Inline Booster Pump (IBP), ladder weight, side winch (including brake), vacuum, cutter diesel-direct and diesel-electric CSD.
• Ability to interpret loggings from the CSD and adjust working method accordingly.
• Familiarity with SMS (Safety Management System).
• Knowledge and ability to use company-supplied survey software.
• Knowledge and ability to use the IMC-IHC dredging console and software/settings.
• Experience with ESCO 48D and 52D cutters.
• Experience with Vosta T4 and T6 equipment.
• Experience with 20 ton delta flip anchors.
• Experience with 20 ton Stev-shark anchors.
• Proven leadership capabilities.
• Clear communication skills.
• Risk assessment capability.
• Ability to conduct and interpret Risk Assessment and Permit to Work procedures.

Additional Information

• The role operates on a worldwide basis.
• All required drills and inspections must be performed at required intervals in accordance with ISM.
• The Senior Dredge Master holds the highest authority on board when designated.
