Role Overview

Specialist Emergency Medicine at NMC Healthcare. This role is based in the United Arab Emirates and requires delivery of professional, ethical, and high-quality clinical emergency care.

Role Purpose

To deliver comprehensive emergency medical assessment, stabilization, and initial treatment to emergency department patients, managing acute clinical risks, coordinating multidisciplinary team response, and ensuring compliance with governance and clinical standards.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Assessment and Clinical Management

• Assess patients entering the emergency room immediately upon arrival.
• Assess a patient's condition to determine the severity of the problem.
• Conduct immediate evaluation and management of emergency patients brought in for treatment.
• Evaluate a wide variety of ailments, sometimes with little to no information.
• Perform physical examinations to diagnose and treat patients.
• Develop effective patient care plans.
• Analyze the medical history and records of patients and plan the best procedure for treatment, taking into account allergies and medical conditions.
• Prescribe or administer medication, therapy, and other specialized medical care to treat or prevent illness, disease, or injury.
• Oversee emergency patients' recovery and ensure that the patient is stable before transferring them to the proper department for further evaluation.
• Respond to all forms of cardiac and cardiopulmonary arrest with immediate effect.
• Take whatever steps are necessary to stabilize the patient for transport to another area of the hospital or transport to another hospital.

Patient Communication and Discharge

• Speak with patients to elicit their medical history and learn the details of a patient's ailments.
• Interact with patient to gather additional history and information about medical condition.
• Keep patients informed about their conditions and treatment.
• Explain procedures and discuss test results or prescribed treatments with patient.
• Speak with a patient's family to update them on a patient's diagnosis and prognosis.
• Provide instructions for discharge and complete necessary paperwork for patients.

Referral and Specialist Coordination

• Refer patients to the appropriate specialist.
• Refer patients to a specialist, such as a surgeon, as necessary.
• Refer patients to another doctor for ongoing care once diagnosis has been completed and initial treatment administered.

Team Leadership and Coordination

• Coordinate with different emergency room department staff to ensure patients receive the necessary treatment.
• Work simultaneously with staff from the emergency department and compliant facility.
• Often lead the team and provide instructions and direction to other team members regarding the specific actions to take with a patient.
• Appropriately make use of other available personnel, whether professional or not, to immediately stabilize the patient in situations where there are multiple emergency cases.
• Often work as part of a team of specialists, nurses, nursing assistants and aides who each perform a defined role when a patient comes to the emergency room.

Governance, Compliance and Professional Development

• Maintain an active Privileges as per the specialty that is consistent with the scope of services and the required experiences to practice it, renewable every two years.
• Ensure ongoing medical competence by participating in the annual relicensing and recertification schemes in United Arab Emirates.
• Maintain and develop professional expertise through self-directed learning and continuous professional development.
• Participate in the in-service education programme and comply with mandatory training requirements, inclusive of CPR, Health & Safety Training and Fire Safety.
• Contribute to the development of Clinical Quality Standards.
• Carry out necessary duties to ensure the best and most cost-effective treatment of patients.

Occupational Safety and Health

• Comply with reasonable occupational safety and health instructions, policies and safe working procedures.
• Use appropriate personal protective equipment and safety systems.
• Be familiar with emergency and evacuation procedures.
• Not willfully or recklessly endanger anyone's health and safety.
• Assist with the preparation of risk assessments.
• Report occupational safety and health hazards, incidents, near misses and issues.
• Reduce, reuse and recycle waste as much as possible.
• Attend all occupational safety and health trainings, awareness programs and mock drills.
• Participate in occupational safety and health management system audits and inspections, ensuring standards are maintained.

Infection Prevention and Control

• Read and implement the NMC Prevention and Control of Infection Policy and Strategy in an effort to maintain the highest possible standards of cleanliness at all times.
• Maintain the strictest hand hygiene, including the five moments of hand hygiene.
• Maintain bare below the elbows protocol at all times.
• Maintain environmental care standards at all times.

Qualifications & Experience

• At least three to five years' post-qualification experience at Specialist level, independent of country.
• At least one year Specialist level experience from a Tier 1 country as specified by the UAE healthcare regulator.
• Basic medical degree and completion of a specialty qualification or education programme (fellowship or diploma) recognised by the relevant UAE healthcare authority.
• Certification and registration in a speciality recognised by relevant UAE healthcare authority.
• Eligibility for relevant healthcare authority registration, such as Membership from Royal College, Arab Board Certification, MS, DM, MPhil or an equivalent recognised by relevant healthcare authority in UAE.

Skills & Competencies
