Shift Chemist

Role Overview

Shift Chemist at ACWA Power, Operations Department. Reports to Chief Chemist or Senior Chemist.

Role Purpose

Conduct qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses and experiments to support quality control, process control, and development of new products and knowledge in power and desalination plant operations.

Key Responsibilities

Safety & Compliance

• Comply with all safety rules and regulations and maintain full awareness of plant safety hazards.
• Familiarize yourself with regulatory requirements pertaining to environmental compliance, chemicals used in the plant, MSDS, plant P&IDs, SOPs, Work Instructions, emergency operation procedures, and related documents.
• Carry out Hazard Risk Assessment and Aspect Impact Assessment activities.

Laboratory Operations & Chemical Analysis

• Conduct all laboratory activities including chemical sampling and analysis pertaining to the plant and ensure all related parameters remain within limits.
• Monitor all chemical parameters and enter periodic readings on log sheets.
• Carry out quality inspection of all chemicals received in the plant.
• Maintain chemical consumption records and coordinate with stores.
• Responsible for housekeeping of laboratory equipment and spillages.

Plant Chemistry & Unit Operations

• Coordinate with Shift Charge Engineer or Supervisor during unit start-up, shutdown, and normal running of the plant.
• Maintain chemistry under your control during round-the-clock shifts.
• Make preparations and carry out acid cleaning of Desalination plants and Hypo plants under supervision of the Chief Chemist as required.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting

• Carry out troubleshooting in chemical dosing systems and laboratory equipment.
• Follow up on day-to-day maintenance as per defect reports.

Documentation & Reporting

• Maintain all records related to plant chemistry.
• Summarize all activities and events that took place during the shift in the log book.
• Prepare monthly reports and other reports pertaining to the area under your supervision.

General Duties

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor Degree in Chemistry (desired).
• Master Degree in Chemistry (preferred).
• Minimum 5 years of experience in a related field.

Skills & Competencies

• Awareness of Quality, Occupational Health & Safety, and Environment Management System principles.
• Knowledge of applicable regulatory requirements.
• Hazard Risk Assessment.
• Aspect Impact Assessment.
• Knowledge of environmental and health impact of chemicals being used in the plant.
• Well conversant with Power and Desalination operational activities.
• Good decision-making skill.
• Good analytical skill.
• ISO 9001, 14001, and OHSAS 18001 awareness or working knowledge (preferred).
