Role Purpose

As a Senior Software Engineer I - Backend, you will advance the development stack and ensure scale as the platform grows to millions of monthly active users across many countries. You will liaise with backend engineers, QA, design, and Tech Team Leads within your product stream while building complex, high-impact solutions and mentoring peers.

Key Responsibilities

Development & Delivery

• Gather an up-to-date, in-depth understanding of the dubizzle codebase and technology stack within weeks.
• Write and maintain exemplary code following dubizzle's programming practices.
• Create unit tests in accordance with established standards to cover assigned work.
• Design and deliver multiple REST-based APIs.
• Handle the entire software development life cycle end-to-end.
• Build complex problems and deliver practical, high-impact solutions.

Architecture & Technical Leadership

• Pioneer reliability and efficiency of the current code base, platforms, and core systems.
• Design solutions and architect technical direction within your product stream.
• Lead planning sessions around new product features and deliver detailed roll-out and roll-back strategies for releases.
• Research and apply industry trends as part of daily work.
• Impact the direction and scope of dubizzle's technical vision within your stream.

Code Quality & Standards

• Code-review all major pull requests and define programming standards.
• Provide constructive feedback to peers.
• Ensure strong understanding of design patterns including asynchronous programming, queuing, logging, security, and persistence.
• Demonstrate mastery of different caching layers and strategies, including memcached.
• Demonstrate mastery of testing methodologies including unit tests, component tests, and integration tests.

Mentoring & Collaboration

• Work in a mentoring capacity within a peer-programming environment.
• Guide tasks irrespective of complexity or scale.
• Liaise with other backend engineers within your product stream.
• Liaise with the QA team, design team, and your Tech Team Lead.
• Liaise with other tech teams to share innovations from your stream.

Maintenance & Operations

• Actively contribute to post-release maintenance issues.
• Demonstrate good understanding of build process management and continuous integration.

Stakeholder Management

• Capacity to push back on incomplete requirements.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Engineering (preferred).
• 6+ years of professional backend software engineering experience in Python (Django).
• Experience with cloud-hosted infrastructure and technologies; AWS preferred.
• Prior experience with Kubernetes and Docker (preferred).
• Experience working on high-traffic and large-scale web products (preferred).
• Experience with web infrastructure, SOA, distributed systems, performance analysis, and search infrastructure.
