Senior Principal Piping Designer

Role Overview

Senior Principal Piping Designer at McDermott. This role completes piping design assignments, directs work activities of others in the piping discipline, and serves as a subject matter expert capable of solving unique and complex problems.

Role Purpose

The Senior Principal Piping Designer leads piping design efforts on complex projects, exercises judgment to identify innovative solutions, works autonomously within established procedures, and directly impacts the achievement of customer, operational, and service objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Engineering

• Perform design and engineering of process facilities within specified timeframes while adhering to maintenance, safety, and quality standards.
• Consider constructability, economics, and operations during Pre-FEED, FEED, or Detailed Design phases.
• Develop 3D Models and ensure clash-free models in coordination with all other discipline requirements.
• Develop Plant Design, 3D Modelling, Drawings, and input into Plant Layout Narrative in accordance with agreed Scope of Work, man-hours, and schedule.

Project Leadership (when acting as Lead Designer)

• Lead the design team to complete tasks within planned schedule and budget, in accordance with standards, McDermott, and project-specific procedures.
• Act as project-based discipline point of contact in communications and meetings with Project Team, Client, vendor/supplier, and/or subcontractor counterparts.
• Ensure inter-discipline aspects of design and deliverables are addressed.
• Coordinate 3D Model Reviews and ensure Review comments are closed.
• Attend project Kickoff meetings, Review meetings, and Vendor meetings.
• Monitor and coordinate the design team remotely if required and lead projects in Multi-Office Project Execution Environment (MOPEX).
• Support and supervise less-experienced members within the design team.
• Support the Lead Piping Engineer in measuring progress and productivity.
• Coordinate all activities within own discipline and interface with other disciplines.
• Ensure effective communications among other disciplines and effective management of change.
• Become fully familiar with Project Scope of Work, specifications, schedule, and inter-discipline requirements, including identifying concerns early and taking appropriate initiatives to address issues.

Design Coordination (when acting as Designers Coordinator)

• Coordinate large Design teams as Designers Coordinator.
• Coordinate project Design interdisciplinary activities to ensure timely and organized distribution of information amongst all Lead Designers.
• Ensure interfaces and deliverables are identified.
• Support the Department Manager with Designers' appraisals.
• Support the Department Manager with strategic development of the Designers' Teams and provide guidance on Training and Technical Development.

Quality & Compliance

• Ensure design deliverables are completed and issued per project specifications, McDermott, and project Level 2 & 3 procedures, within agreed schedules and budgets.
• Ensure work is carried out in accordance with McDermott requirements, Client and Statutory Design Codes, Standards, or Procedures with particular focus on Health and Safety Policies.
• Identify and resolve technical, operational, and organizational problems that impact effectiveness.

Scope & Change Management

• Identify changes to scope and promptly raise change notifications in the Change Management System.
• Assist the Lead Piping Engineer in raising technical queries, preparing piping estimates, and job scope changes.
• Able to identify issues as soon as they arise and follow up with any required corrective action.

Planning & Coordination

• Set priorities, organize own work and time to meet objectives.
• As Lead Designer, forecast and plan resource requirements.
• Apply knowledge and skills to perform complex work.
• Support Proposals and Studies from a Piping point of view.

Team & Stakeholder Management

• Exchange ideas and information effectively and explain difficult concepts.
• Negotiate with others to adopt different points of view.
• Impact the level of service and the team's ability to meet quality and timeliness objectives.
• Demonstrate good leadership and management skills.
• Be guided by policies, resource requirements, budgets, and the business plan.
• Be accountable for the performance and results of a team within the Piping Discipline.
• Be knowledgeable of other disciplines' work processes.

Qualifications & Experience

• High School diploma in Mechanical Design, Drafting, or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
• 25+ years of Oil and Gas trackable experience with major contractor performing Pre-FEED, FEED, and Detailed Design.
• Advanced depth and breadth of expertise in Process Plant Design and using 3D CAD systems including E3D or SP3D.
• Detailed knowledge of AutoCAD.
• Experience as Lead Designer on medium or large size projects.
• Recognized expert in one or more skill sets.
• Knowledgeable in project coordination and execution.
• Developed advanced and specialized expertise within own area to perform the most complex work.

Additional Information

• Reports to: Project Lead Piping Engineer (as Lead Piping Designer), Project Engineer, Project Engineer Manager. Functional reporting to Department Manager.
• Liaise with: Lead Designers and Designers, Lead Engineer and Engineers, other Engineering and Design disciplines Leads, Project Engineer, Project Manager, IM Group, Document Control, Client representatives.
• Supervises: Design team assigned to different projects during the detailing and production phases.
