Role Purpose

To exemplify clinical excellence by providing safe, compassionate, and individualized perioperative nursing care across operating theatre, recovery, and related clinical settings. The post holder will advocate for patients, maintain transparency, recognize the uniqueness of each patient, and contribute to an outstanding patient experience while engaging with a learning culture and leading positive changes in healthcare.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Assessment & Care Planning

• Perform systematic patient assessment, re-assessment and collect pertinent data about the patient's health or situation.
• Understand and analyse the assessment information and data.
• Determine actual and potential nursing diagnoses, problems, and issues.
• Define the predicted and expected outcomes of the patient's planned care.
• Create and evaluate patient care plans with the interprofessional team, in collaboration with the patient and patient's bystanders.
• Be responsible for providing and coordinating patient care, educating patients and the public about various health conditions, and providing advice and emotional support to patients and their family members.

Clinical Monitoring & Vital Signs

• Record vital signs, recognize, address and escalate all abnormalities.
• Monitor the condition and care of patients post-operatively in the recovery room.
• Provide comfort and prevent suffering for post-operative patients.
• Support a compassionate and therapeutic environment for post-operative patients.
• Monitor patients for any side effects and reactions to medications.
• Monitor patients for any reactions to treatments such as IV fluids or blood products.

Treatments & Procedures

• Administer medications and monitor patients for any side effects and reactions.
• Administer treatments such as IV fluids or blood products and monitor patients for any reactions.
• Provide wound care management.
• Prepare patients for medical examination and treatment.
• Assist in medical procedures invasive or non-invasive as needed.
• Understand different diagnostic tests and laboratory examinations.
• Perform essential life support as per regulatory requirements and scope such as but not limited to Basic Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation.

Operating Theatre - Circulating Nurse Duties

• Assist in positioning, responding to comfort and safety of patient.
• Assist the Surgeon and Anesthetist in operation theatre.
• Provide for accurate care and handling of specimens.
• Observe and enforce strict standards of asepsis.
• Observe, check and monitor all equipment used during surgery to confirm they are running smoothly.
• Handle patient documentation.
• Inventory all items both pre- and post-surgery.

Operating Theatre - Scrub Nurse Duties

• Select and handle instruments and supplies used for the operation, passing them to surgeon.
• Inventory all items both pre- and post-surgery.
• Deliver direct surgical care by assisting physicians.
• Help control bleeding.
• Provide wound exposure.
• Assist in suturing patients after the surgery.
• Count all instruments and mops before closing the wounds.

Recovery Room

• Assessment, implementation and coordination of complex care and interventions.
• Demonstrate awareness and compliance with legal and ethical aspects of peri-operative nursing.
• Demonstrate competence required for effective and safe patient care following anesthesia including patent airway techniques, obstructive airway intervention, knowledge of advanced life support techniques, patient monitoring and resuscitation, pharmacology, management and control of acute pain, nausea and vomiting, temperature regulation, life threatening complications, infection control principles and practices.

Patient Admission, Transfer & Discharge

• Facilitate the process of safe patient admission, transfer and discharge.

Professional Practice & Development

• Maintain and update technical and clinical skills related to nursing practice.
• Employ strategies to promote patients' health and a safe environment.
• Work collaboratively with other team members and uphold the NMC Nursing Strategy to provide safe and outstanding care.
• Assess and identify patients' needs and implement and monitor the patient's medical plan and treatment, working with a team of physicians and other health care specialists or allied health in various settings.

Administrative & Coordination

• Liaise with wards where patients are awaiting their operation or procedure by putting information about each surgical procedure or operation onto a computer system.
• Take phone messages and complete paperwork.
• Order supplies of equipment.
• Liaise with the hospital's Sterile Services Department to ensure that equipment has been returned once re-sterilized and re-packaged.

Qualifications & Experience

• Hold an appropriate license to work as a registered nurse in the relevant regulatory health authority with all the qualifications and experience these mandates.
• Hold a valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider card.

Skills & Competencies

• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English (spoken and written).
• Ability to communicate effectively in Arabic (desirable).
• Evidenced ability to work as part of an inter-professional team (desirable).
• Organizational and administrative skills with competence in using the electronic medical record platform for clinical documentation (desirable).

Additional Information

• The post holder must manage their own professional re-licensure.
• The post holder must be willing to work across departments when necessary.
