Role Purpose

The Registered Midwife delivers comprehensive midwifery care across the continuum of childbirth, working collaboratively with an interprofessional team to ensure safe outcomes for mother and newborn while upholding NMC's nursing mission, vision, and values.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Practice & Scope

• Practice in accordance with regulatory Scope of Practice, ensuring completion of all competencies and required clinical privileging prior to providing direct patient care.
• Provide safe and evidence-based practice care in relation to spontaneous vaginal deliveries, assist with instrumental vaginal deliveries, and caesarean deliveries (both emergent and elective) for the mother and newborn, reflective of scope of practice, life support provider status and clinical privileging.
• Assist the obstetrician with required procedures or perform as per scope of practice, competence, and clinical privileging, such as artificial rupture of membranes (AROM) and sterile vaginal examinations.

Intrapartum Care

• Monitor the progress of labouring mothers, perform CTG monitoring and interpret findings of foetal heart rates, recognizing when to escalate to the obstetrician, reflective of scope of practice, competence, and clinical privileging.
• Support women during childbirth reflective of the woman's birthing plan, maintain knowledge regarding stem cell collection, monitor in all stages of labour and the condition of the fetus, reflective of evidence-based practice and the WHO Mother Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative.
• Perform episiotomy reflective of evidence-based practice and when clinically indicated only, as per scope of practice, competence, and clinical privileging.
• Repair perineal laceration first and second degree as per scope of practice, competence, and clinical privileging.

Maternal Postpartum Care

• Perform immediate post-delivery care of the mother to include fundal massage, placental examination, quantifiable blood loss assessment and monitoring of vital signs, with immediate recognition and escalation to the obstetrician as needed, in accordance to scope of practice.
• Provide wound care management, education and support to women following caesarean sections, episiotomy, and vaginal tears.

Newborn Care

• Perform immediate post-delivery care of the newborn(s) to include taking of cord blood gases, performing the initial steps of newborn care, newborn identification, physical assessment and monitoring of vital signs, with immediate recognition and escalation to the neonatologist as needed, in accordance to scope of practice.

Health Promotion & Education

• Support, promote, and protect the ten steps within the WHO Mother Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative recommendations during the antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal, and newborn periods.
• Provide education and support strategies to the mother and newborn that encourage early breastfeeding and skin-to-skin bonding.
• Educate patients and the public about various health conditions and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members.

Patient Assessment & Planning

• Perform systematic patient assessment, reassessment and collect pertinent data about the patient's health or situation and escalate immediately when appropriate.
• Understand and analyse the assessment information and data.
• Determine actual and potential midwifery diagnoses, problems, and issues.
• Define the predicted and expected outcomes of the patient's planned care.
• Create and evaluate patient care plans with the interprofessional team, in collaboration with the patient and patient's bystanders.
• Assess and identify patients' needs and implement and monitor the patient's medical plan and treatment.

Clinical Monitoring & Vital Signs

• Record vital signs, recognize, address and escalate all abnormalities or deviations as per policy.
• Prepare patients for medical examination and treatment.

Medication & Treatment Administration

• Administer medications and monitor patients closely for any side effects and reactions, for example during an induction of labour.
• Administer treatments such as IV fluids, IV medications and blood products, monitoring patients for any reactions.

Clinical Skills Maintenance & Emergency Response

• Maintain and update technical and clinical skills related to midwifery practice.
• Maintain essential life support as per regulatory requirements and scope of practice such as Basic Life Support, PROMPT, CTG and Neonatal Resuscitation.
• Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and clinical skills of obstetric emergencies, midwifery management of such emergencies and care.
• Understand different diagnostic tests and laboratory examinations.

Patient Care Coordination

• Be responsible for providing and coordinating patient care.
• Employ strategies to promote patients' health and a safe environment.
• Assist in medical procedures invasive and non-invasive as needed for the patient and to obtain specimens as ordered.
• Facilitate the process of safe patient admission, transfer and discharge, inclusive of the mother and newborn.

Bereavement & End-of-Life Care

• Provide parents with bereavement support, advice and compassion during end-of-life care in relation to congenital birth defects, loss of pregnancy, miscarriage, stillbirth and neonatal death.
• Comply with regulatory and NMC policy requirements with the disposal of human tissue.

Teamwork & Professional Development

• Work with a team of physicians and other health care specialists or allied health in various settings.
• Work collaboratively with other team members and uphold the NMC Nursing Strategy in order to provide safe and outstanding care to patients and their bystanders all the time, every time.

Qualifications & Experience

• Hold an appropriate license to work as a registered midwife in the relevant regulatory health authority with all qualifications and experience these mandates.
• Manage own professional re-licensure.

Skills & Competencies

• Hold a valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider card.
• Communicate clearly and effectively in English (spoken and written).
• Demonstrate ability to work as part of an interprofessional team.
• Possess organizational and administrative skills to use the electronic medical record platform for clinical documentation.
• Communicate effectively in Arabic (desirable).
