Role Overview

Practical Nurse-OPD-Pediatric Clinic at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC).

Role Purpose

The Practical Nurse provides appropriate patient care according to established care plans under the supervision of Registered Nurses in accordance with the Nursing Scope of Practice. The role adheres to and promotes the professional Nurses Code of Conduct for Abu Dhabi. The Practical Nurse is not licensed for independent practice and remains responsible and accountable for their own actions. The role supports and promotes the mission, vision and values of the organization.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care Assessment and Implementation

• Assess and implement nursing care for patients under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, ensuring a patient-centered approach to care.
• Assist in the activities of daily living for patients in accordance with the patient care plan, including distribution of patient meals and assisting patients with hygiene needs.
• Report any significant changes in the patient's condition to a Registered Nurse immediately.

Emergency Response

• Respond to all levels of emergencies according to the organization's policies and procedures.

Communication and Documentation

• Ensure timely, accurate communication and complete documentation with patients, including verbal and written correspondence with the patient or the patient's representative.
• Manage all timely communication and documentation relating to individual patient care as delegated by the nurse in charge.
• Ensure the Registered Nurse is informed of observations and care provided for patients and documented appropriately.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding patient and family information by promoting professional interdisciplinary communication.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration

• Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team in the management of effective and efficient patient-centered care in a professional manner.
• Apply relationship-building values and the principles of team dynamics to perform effectively in different team roles to plan and deliver patient and population-centered care that is safe, timely, efficient, effective, and equitable.

Technology and Records Management

• Participate in documentation and use of information technology and relevant electronic medical records.
• Gather records of patients regarding current problems, medications, and allergies and review the medical record.

Administrative and Operational Tasks

• Assist Registered Nurses and clerical staff in administrative duties as required.
• Maintain adequate inventory of examination room supplies and prepare exam rooms at the beginning and end of day and between each patient contact.
• Ensure exam rooms, stations and clinic areas are stocked with adequate supplies to promote efficient patient care.
• Complete all other tasks and duties as assigned by the line manager.

Patient Education and Information

• Ensure patients and families are provided with comprehensive information and resources to meet their health care needs.

Outpatient Clinic Operations

• Interact with clinic patients during the appointment time frame, including greeting, rooming, vital signs, preparing the patient for exams or procedures, and providing instruction and follow-up directions to the patient.

Cost and Resource Management

• Provide feedback on strategies to decrease costs and effective utilization of resources.

Safety and Risk Management

• Maintain a safe and secure unit environment, identify, report, and document any risks and/or incidents appropriately.

Qualifications & Experience

Required Experience

• Minimum of 1 year in similar health setting.

Required Education

• Diploma of Nursing not less than 18 months course duration.
• Current National License.
• BLS (Basic Life Support).

Desired Qualifications

• ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) relevant to the area of specialty.
