Pharmacist

Role Overview

Pharmacist at American Hospital Dubai, located in Dubai. This role provides leadership in the safe and efficient distribution of medications in accordance with relevant laws, regulations, and standards of pharmaceutical care.

Role Purpose

Lead pharmacy operations to ensure safe and compliant medication distribution, maintain accurate patient medication profiles, prevent adverse drug events, and provide clinical pharmacy services to patients and healthcare professionals.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical & Patient Care

• Review physician orders and prescriptions to ensure appropriateness of drug therapy and that prescriptions are dispensed per prescribers' intentions.
• Monitor patient medication profiles to prevent drug interactions, allergic reactions, and adverse drug reactions.
• Perform patient teaching on appropriate medication use, non-prescription medications, and over-the-counter drugs.
• Assist in providing symptom assessment leading to over-the-counter medication provision and lifestyle advice for community-based health concerns.
• Inform patients and the public about medication side effects and monitor unwanted effects in collaboration with other healthcare professionals and appropriate authorities.
• Dispense medications with proper labeling and instructions regarding usage, dosage, side effects, and precautions.
• Provide drug information to doctors, hospital staff, and patients on proper medication use.
• Play an active role in prevention, detection, and resolution of drug-related problems.

Pharmacy Operations & Management

• Supervise Pharmacy Technicians and other support staff in the performance of assigned duties.
• Monitor and oversee that the Pharmacy is kept in a neat, clean, and orderly fashion.
• Maintain medication stock levels at both the Pharmacy and Ward levels according to American Hospital Dubai's stock management principles.
• Order, receive, and issue stock according to American Hospital Dubai's stock management principles.
• Manage excess, expiry, and obsolete stock.
• Manage stock returned for credits and outstanding orders.
• Follow up on defective products.
• Establish inter-hospital stock transfers controlled for doctor or ward-specific medication needs.
• Conduct inspections of medication storage and drug administration to ensure compliance with laid down standards.

Inventory & Compliance

• Register all Controlled Drugs (CD) and Semi-Controlled Drugs (SCD) dispensed prescriptions in the corresponding Dubai Health Authority Register Book.
• Participate in Inventory according to American Hospital Dubai's policy twice a year.
• Participate in cycle count as part of inventory management, including investigation of stock variances.
• Generate controlled, semi-controlled, and narcotic drug reports and submit them as per Ministry of Health regulations.
• Document incident reports and adverse drug reactions as needed and required in line with American Hospital Dubai's policies.
• Demonstrate professional ethics and competence in all performance output areas according to Dubai Health Authority's code of conduct.
• Ensure confidentiality of patient information is maintained and adhere to the code of ethics of the profession.

Financial & Administrative

• Ensure the patient billing process is adhered to.
• Process cash and card transactions in line with American Hospital Dubai's finance policy.
• Input physician medication orders into Pharmacy Patient Medication Profile and maintain this profile and related records during system downtime and in exceptional cases where verbal orders have been accepted.

Quality & Continuous Improvement

• Participate in Drug Utilization Review programs and contribute to quality processes within the department.
• Ensure that client expectations are met and that quality client service principles are maintained.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy.
• Current active home country registration.
• Dubai Health Authority (DHA) License.
• Minimum of three (3) years relevant experience working as a pharmacist, preferably in a hospital and/or clinic.
