Job description

Role Overview

Nursing Unit Manager - Royal/VIP at SEHA (Shaikh Khalifa Medical City). Reports to senior nursing leadership and leads the nursing team on a designated unit.

Role Purpose

Implement and deliver age-appropriate patient care aligned with organizational mission, vision and values. Ensure nursing staff adhere to professional codes of conduct and scope of practice. Manage clinical and operational activities to optimize patient care, customer satisfaction and safety. Lead the Nurses Leadership Team and direct overall service delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Liaising with Nursing Senior Leadership

  • Partner with senior nursing leadership to ensure efficient healthcare delivery.
  • Act as focal point for all healthcare issues related to nursing.
  • Participate in budget preparations and budget control for the respective nursing unit/ward.
  • Provide senior nursing leadership with clinical and administrative reports.
  • Support and work in partnership with nursing executive in setting the strategic direction for the nursing/midwifery department.

Leadership

  • Coordinate hospital services during shifts and take lead role as required.
  • Support an environment that enables staff to acquire skills, identify and develop new ideas to ensure commitment to organizational goals.
  • Address immediate legal and ethical dilemmas in a professional, collaborative manner and refer to relevant persons for action.
  • Participate in recruitment processes when necessary.
  • Lead response to disasters, codes, and incidents in accordance with organizational policy and procedures.
  • Provide leadership in critical thinking, conflict management and problem solving.
  • Lead support of evidence-based practice, quality initiatives and promotion of a healthy workplace environment.
  • Maintain appropriate contact with the organization's nursing executive/administrator "on call," providing timely and accurate information.
  • Monitor and evaluate appropriate utilization of staff in collaboration with the nursing team.
  • Ensure bed allocation and staff skill mix are appropriate for patient condition.
  • Collaborate with non-nursing departments and disciplines regarding issues that may negatively impact patient care; facilitate solutions as needed.
  • Participate in committees and task forces that are interdisciplinary or interdepartmental; may chair, co-chair or lead such groups.
  • Act as a change agent for the organization.

Management of Clinical Practice

  • Facilitate effective patient flow utilizing bed capacity and staffing resources appropriately.
  • Monitor and review staff skill mix and align staffing and workload according to patient acuity using available information.
  • Build relationships with staff, peers and colleagues to support interdisciplinary and interdepartmental planning aimed at improving patient outcomes.
  • Promote continuity of care that is patient centered, outcome oriented and focused toward discharge planning.
  • Ensure quality standards of nursing documentation are maintained according to organizational policy.
  • Perform hospital rounds to assess, identify problems, determine solutions and guide teams in clinical and operational management of services.

Communication

  • Liaise effectively with other health care providers both internal and external to the organization.
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of patient, family and organization information in accordance with confidentiality policy.
  • Facilitate effective communication between patient, family and the interdisciplinary health care team as required.
  • Communicate with all units/departments as appropriate to maximize efficiency and expedite admission, transfer and discharge processes.
  • Use information technology to access, transmit and produce information as necessary.

Performance Improvement and Risk Management

  • Support a culture of performance improvement.
  • Monitor and evaluate the quality of nursing care provided.
  • Actively participate in accreditation activities.
  • Undertake patient and environmental risk assessments and document corrective action to improve patient outcomes as required.
  • Audit compliance with organizational documentation standards.
  • Support and participate in ongoing educational and research programs within the nursing department and organization.
  • Support and participate in the implementation of evidence-based practice to promote clinical knowledge and a research-based clinical practice environment.
  • Monitor and support organizational Key Performance Indicators and Clinical Indicators; reinforce corrective action to improve clinical service.
  • Coordinate, monitor and report incidents occurring within the organization after business hours, facilitating corrective or preventative action as required.
  • Minimize exposure to incidents of infection/cross infection of patients, staff, visitors and the general public; ensure staff adherence to infection control policies and procedures.
  • Monitor compliance with International and HAAD Patient Safety Goals.
  • Report on nursing department activity including sick leave and occupancy rates.

Education

  • Support staff to provide a suitable environment for patient and family learning.
  • Serve as a clinical and administrative resource.
  • Engage in health promotion activities in the organization and community.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Identify and utilize various mechanisms to assist in development of managerial and leadership skills.
  • Utilize internal educational resources and external agencies to assist with development of managerial competencies.
  • Develop and achieve annual performance criteria and goals in conjunction with the Line Manager.
  • Attend and participate in orientation and other hospital-based programs as agreed with the Line Manager.
  • Maintain and update own professional development through relevant educational activities.
  • Maintain and update a professional portfolio.
  • Initiate action and report to the appropriate manager when staff behavior and/or performance does not meet professional standards.
  • Ensure effective and efficient utilization of human resources, consumables and equipment.

General

  • Contribute to wider corporate and organizational development needs as appropriate within scope of practice.
  • Ensure compliance with Health and Safety regulations of the organization.
  • Uphold organizational customer service standards at all times.

Qualifications & Experience

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in nursing or equivalent qualification from a program of not less than 3 years duration from an accredited program.
  • Valid and current national nursing license.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Desired Qualifications

  • Certificate or postgraduate diploma in nursing, healthcare, management or administration.
  • International accreditation experience.

Required Experience

  • Not less than 6 years of clinical experience in appropriate and relevant healthcare settings post-qualification.
  • Not less than 2 years in a Senior Charge Nurse position, OR not less than 3 years in a Charge Nurse position.
