Role Purpose

The Nurse Supervisor provides clinical guidance, direction and support to all nurses and caregivers across departments and the facility. The role ensures clinical areas run efficiently and safely, maintains appropriate staffing and supervision, and leads the advancement of clinical practice, patient experience, and continuous improvement. The post holder works within their scope of practice, putting the health, wellbeing and safety of patients first as they assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient needs.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership and Supervision

• Provide clinical guidance, direction and support for all Nurses and Caregivers in their departments and across the facility.
• Ensure that all relevant clinical areas are running efficiently and safely together with the involvement of all Nurse Managers and the Director of Nursing.
• Ensure all clinical areas are staffed accordingly, provide supervision to all nursing personnel in the clinical areas, directs, and assists as required.
• Direct the movement of nursing staff to support clinical need, in accordance with nurse's scope, training and competence.
• Assist with the clinical supervision and education of staff, advancement of process changes, accountability and responsibility for all patient care activities and daily operations.
• Empower all registered nurses to be involved in shared professional decision-making and collective leadership within their work areas.
• Enable nursing excellence, instill a strong sense of professional pride and offer proven strategies to help ensure that the care delivered to patients and populations is of the highest calibre.

Patient Care Delivery

• Perform direct clinical nursing care when required, mandating the requirement to wear NMC nursing uniform.
• Conduct regular clinical rounds with nursing and other members of the inter-professional team.
• Conduct regular clinical rounds talking with patients and patient bystanders being cared for within their clinical areas, to support patient experience.
• Action and execute patient feedback to support a positive patient experience.
• Carry out patient admissions, discharges, internal and external transfers as required.
• Perform essential life support as per regulatory requirements and scope such as but not limited to Basic Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation.
• Promote a patient focused approach to care in collaboration with all relevant health professionals, acting as an ambassador for the facility in clinical and medical services.
• Maintain and demonstrate clinical competence using evidence-based practice, nursing knowledge, research and reflective practice in all aspects of patient care including those with complex needs.
• Involve patients in their own healthcare and recovery through education, awareness and positive reinforcement.

Safety and Patient Advocacy

• Always speak up if safety is a concern.

• Take responsibility for their own actions.
• Communicate effectively with colleagues to ensure patients receive the safest, most effective care possible.
• Ensure timely expert advice or senior nursing support is sought when a patient's condition fails to respond to prescribed treatment.
• Manage a deteriorating patient without delay, using the Early Warning System escalation process and American Heart Association emergency algorithms.
• Always maintain patient confidentiality.

Education, Training and Development

• Ensure relevant training and competency is undertaken to deliver care safely.
• Maintain up-to-date mandatory training requirements.
• Follow and comply with the NMC Nurse Competency Matrix / Framework, relevant to their role profile.
• Be willing to learn new clinical skills and actively contribute to the learning culture through attendance of journal clubs and professional development programs.
• Support and supervise pre-registration and new nurses and other health care workers when required.
• Participate in teaching, mentorship and preceptorship when required.
• Participate in clinical supervision of student nurses, newly graduated nurses, newly hired experienced nurses, return to practice nurses and nurses undergoing cross-training or upskilling.
• Participate in Performance Improvement Plans when required.
• Share knowledge and skill with others, to improve patient care and services.
• Ensure they are skilled, trained and competent before using any medical device.
• Assist, engage with and contribute to the professional development of colleagues.

Quality Assurance and Governance

• Maintain awareness of and comply with the NMC Policies and Procedures.
• Participate in all activities related to DOH/DHA/MOH/MOHAP and NMC Quality Improvement when required.
• Uphold the regulatory and accreditation standards.
• Continually seek to improve the service of and care delivery for patients and their families.
• Report and notify all untoward/serious and near miss incidents to your direct line manager and then through the incident reporting system in a timely manner.
• Cooperate with all investigations and audits when requested to do so in the interest of developing a learning culture and seeking to improve care and services.
• Promote customer service based on NMC patient satisfaction results.
• Share best practices and quality patient outcomes through audit.
• Be aware of the impact of nursing care on patient outcomes measured through Nursing Sensitive Key Performance Indicators and external benchmarks.
• Contribute to a positive practice environment, upholding the six standards of ANCC Pathway to Excellence®.
• Establish, plan, implement and monitor KPIs that are relevant to the business and department(s).
• Ensure that the Nurses are providing patient care within the facility and that it is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures.
• Participate as a team member of Quality Management team in implementing standard operating procedures and protocols relating to patient care services.
• Participate and lead in internal clinical audits, data collection and communicate to the clinical team to improve and change practice, reporting to the Director of Nursing.
• Develop policies and procedures relating to patient care.
• Assist in updating clinical policies and guidelines in line with skill and experience.

Professional Practice and Delegation

• Uphold the reputation of the nursing profession at all times.

• Be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care under the indirect supervision of senior nursing staff.
• Comply with all aspects of the UAE Code of Conduct, Scope of Practice and licensure as per the regulator.
• Refuse to undertake any task for which you have not been trained and are not competent to undertake.
• Always seek expert help when the demand of care, service or skill falls outside your capabilities.
• Only delegate tasks to those team members who are trained, skilled and competent to undertake such tasks.
• Ensure re-licensure is managed in a timely manner.

Stakeholder Engagement and Equipment Management

• Liaise with multiple stakeholders regarding the suitability of clinical equipment, inventory supplies and contribute to product evaluation.

• Promote diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in service delivery and employment practices.
• Comply with NMC equality and diversity policies, procedures and initiatives.
• Ensure commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children and vulnerable adults in accordance with Federal Law No. 3 of 2016 (Wadeema's Law).

Infection Prevention and Control

• Read and implement the NMC Infection Prevention and Control Policy and Strategy in an effort to maintain the highest possible standards of cleanliness at all times, thus reducing the risk of infection in patients, staff and visitors.
• Maintain the strictest hand hygiene compliance encompassing 5 moments of hand hygiene, bare below the elbows and environmental care at all times.

Occupational Safety and Health

• Comply with Occupational Safety and Health Management Systems instructions, policies and safe working procedures.
• Use appropriate personal protective equipment and safety systems.
• Be familiar with emergency and evacuation procedures.
• Not willfully or recklessly endanger anyone's health and safety.
• Assist with the preparation of risk assessments.
• Report Occupational Safety and Health Hazards, incidents, near misses and issues.
• Reduce, Reuse, Recycling of waste as much as possible.
• Attend all Occupational Safety and Health trainings, awareness programs and mock drills.
• Participate in the Occupational Safety and Health Management Systems audits and inspections, ensuring standards are maintained.
