Role Overview
Lead Mechanical Engineer (O&G, Mechanical Equipment - Static) at NOV. This is a senior technical leadership role responsible for the mechanical engineering integrity of assigned activities in the oil and gas industry, with focus on static equipment design and project delivery.
Role Purpose
To ensure technical integrity, quality compliance, and cost-effective delivery of mechanical engineering projects within NOV's quality management system, regulatory framework, and business objectives. The role combines independent technical execution with team leadership, vendor management, and continuous operational improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership and Integrity
- Own technical integrity of assigned mechanical engineering activities.
- Ensure quality compliance according to the quality management system, governing rules, regulations, standards, specifications, and procedures.
- Execute independent professional responsibility for work assigned to the team.
- Establish and maintain technical requisitions as owner.
- Review and own equipment datasheets for inquiry and purchase orders.
- Participate in package-specific tests and inspections as agreed with the Project Quality Manager.
Design and Engineering Deliverables
- Review designs, drawings, and models.
- Prepare mechanical datasheets and material requisitions.
- Develop specifications and other engineering documentation.
- Perform detail engineering, analysis, and calculations.
- Input sketches for draftsman and 3D modeling designer.
- Evaluate equipment design progress and development.
- Conduct equipment design calculations and finite element analysis (FEA).
- Lead layout development and skid-based designs.
- Support strategy development and implementation for the mechanical engineering department.
- Review project design basis and specifications to ensure integrity aligned with project requirements.
Procurement and Vendor Management
- Own technical bid evaluation (TBE) process.
- Originate, drive resolution, and coordinate clarification logs with bidders for Technical Deviations and Clarifications (TD&C), one per bidder.
- Prepare documented Recommendation for Award (RfA) based on TBE and TD&C outcomes.
- Interface with subcontractors, suppliers, and vendors.
- Execute general procurement support tasks, documentation, and reporting.
- Review supplier deliverables; collect and check other disciplines' comments; prepare mark-up; decide and stamp document status codes; complete and file relevant checklists.
- Participate in the supplier tender process including scope development, tender evaluation input, and clarification activities.
- Raise technical queries (TQs) and prepare post-order vendor document reviews.
Project Execution and Planning
- Contribute to efficient execution in compliance with project schedule.
- Execute projects with quality and cost-effective engineering deliverables according to company directives, instructions, and applicable laws, rules, and regulations.
- Perform budget analysis, resource deployment, and resource management.
- Manage schedules and work to tight deadlines.
- Prepare deliverable lists, schedules, man-hour estimates, resource requirements, and progress reports.
- Review designs, plans, layouts, and working drawings; manage resources to ensure project execution within time and budgeted parameters.
- Monitor fast-track projects closely and meet project deadlines on time.
- Demonstrate deftness in rapidly ramping projects in coordination with clients, consultants, and contractors.
- Allocate tasks to team leads and technical experts on abroad sites for technical support as required.
- Critically analyze comments received from clients and advise the project team regarding potential extra-contractual requirements or scope variations.
- Drive and coordinate closure of punch lists.
Team Development and Knowledge Transfer
- Train and facilitate experience transfer to less experienced engineering personnel.
- Allocate tasks to team leads and technical experts.
- Participate in design review and progress review meetings.
Continuous Improvement and Compliance
- Pursue professional development within own discipline and area.
- Report deviations and suggest improvements to the company quality management system.
- Proactively work to continuously improve the company and its operations through Lean and Lean-like (LL) initiatives.
- Participate in appraisal processes; ensure objectives are entered into the system and reviewed on time as required.
- Work closely with peers to reach common and shared goals for NOV.
- Ensure relevant working methods are followed.
- Perform tasks to reduce environment and health risks.
- Ensure tasks are performed to high quality; suggest improvements where needed.
- Participate in evaluation of working methods and conditions to minimize workplace and environmental incident risk and quality issues.
- Ensure processes comply with internal and external requirements, are defined and documented, continually measured, evaluated, improved, and secured.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of quality and safety of products and deliveries.
Reporting and Communication
- Report to the Lead Engineer, Engineering Manager, and Project Manager.
- Report any non-compliance with HSEQ requirements to the Team Manager.
- Interact with the Engineering Manager regarding technical and project-related challenges.
- Take personal responsibility for HSE by focusing on own behavior.
- Ensure own work follows company requirements for HSEQ.
General Technical Assignments
- Execute general technical assignments as requested by project management.
Qualifications & Experience
Education
- Bachelor's degree or post-graduate degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent from a recognized university.
Experience
- Minimum 15+ years of relevant experience in mechanical engineering from the oil and gas industry (upstream and downstream).
- Proven technical experience in static equipment engineering.
- Exposure in equipment design calculation and FEA.
- Exposure in layout development and skid-based designs.
- Equipment handling experience covering material of construction: carbon steel (CS), low-temperature carbon steel (LTCS), stainless steel (SS), CS+Clad, low alloy steel (LAS), high alloy steel (HAS), NACE MR0175, and hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) resistant materials for applications with temperatures ranging from hot service to cryogenic with special services including hydrogen, lethal, wet sour, cyclic, and seawater applications.
Skills & Competencies
Technical Software and Tools
- Extensive skills using essential pressure vessel design software such as PV-Elite, Compress, TANK, and equivalent tools.
Mechanical Engineering Knowledge
- Good knowledge in equipment design (static and rotary).
- Detail engineering knowledge of vessel internals.
- Detail engineering knowledge of rotating equipment and associated accessories including lube oil systems, fuel gas systems, CIP systems, and associated electrical and instrumentation item interfaces.
- Good knowledge of international mechanical codes and standards applicable to static equipment: ASME SEC VIII DIV.1, ASME SEC VIII DIV.2, TEMA, PD5500, API 650, API 660, API 661, and equivalent standards.
- Good knowledge of international mechanical codes and standards applicable to rotary equipment: API 610, API 674, API 675, API 676, API 617, API 618, API 619, API 672, and equivalent standards.
- Standardization of design procedures, review checklists, and design guidelines.
Interdisciplinary Knowledge
- Good interface knowledge with other disciplines, especially process, piping, electrical, and instrumentation.
- Knowledge of all discipline documents and drawings required.

Additional Information
