Role Purpose

The Aviation Support Equipment Mechanic III diagnoses, repairs, maintains, and inspects aviation support equipment and related systems used in direct and indirect aircraft support operations. This position requires expertise in mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems troubleshooting, and responsibility for documenting maintenance actions, monitoring trends, and ensuring equipment readiness for flight operations.

Key Responsibilities

Diagnosis & Repair

• Diagnose malfunctions, disassemble, inspect, evaluate, and perform necessary repairs on all required support equipment according to technical instructions and directives.
• Determine requirements for repairs, modifications, and part replacements.
• Troubleshoot, repair, rework, and maintain hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, and electrical systems.
• Remove, adjust, repair, and replace or re-install functional components and incorporate applicable technical directives and bulletins.
• Perform close tolerance adjustment, repair, and rework of equipment in and out of shop area.
• Analyze, diagnose, and repair support equipment using conventional and digital multi-meters, voltmeters, ohmmeters, oscilloscopes, and hand tools.
• Diagnose mechanical and electronic circuitry malfunctions using visual and auditory senses, test equipment, and technical maintenance data sources.

Maintenance Operations

• Perform scheduled, unscheduled, and hourly or calendar inspections in accordance with KAF 4790.2 and applicable publications.
• Perform "O" level, "I" level, and authorized commercial repair of all Common Support Equipment (CSE), Material Handling Equipment (MHE), and Palletized Systems Equipment (PSE) in accordance with KAF 4790.2 and applicable maintenance manuals.
• Service equipment with required fluids such as oil, water, coolant, hydraulic fluid, refrigerant, and compressed air.
• Operate, clean, inspect, and service all assigned support equipment including towing vehicles, Bobtail Ford trucks, Tow Tractors (Tug), and U-30 aircraft tow vehicle.
• Inspect and approve completed maintenance actions.

Battery & Specialized Systems

• Troubleshoot, inspect, service, test, and recondition storage batteries including lead-acid, gel, and sealed type.
• Perform "I" level maintenance functions in support of In-Flight Refueling Reel/system maintenance, nose landing gear and main landing gear tire rebuilding, main landing gear brake repair and rebuilding, battery maintenance support, and oxygen regulator testing and repair.

Corrosion & Preservation

• Perform Corrosion Control/Prevention, Preservation, and de-preservation of support equipment.

Technical Documentation & Systems

• Review, interpret, and apply maintenance procedures in support of assigned maintenance actions.
• Apply practical knowledge of wiring schematics and interpretation of technical data contained within those schematics and sources of maintenance data.
• Read and interpret manufacturers' maintenance manuals, service bulletins, technical data, engineering data, and other specifications to determine feasibility and method of repairing or replacing malfunctioning or damaged components.
• Troubleshoot discrepancies by studying drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manuals, technical publications, and historical maintenance actions.
• Use illustrated parts breakdowns (IPBs) to determine material requirements, research associated part numbers, and requisition repair parts, materials, and consumable supplies through supply system.
• Ensure accurate entry of data into the locally used computer database system to document maintenance actions, monitor maintenance trends, analyze equipment requirements, and maintain equipment records.
• Use automated maintenance data systems to monitor maintenance trends, analyze equipment requirements, and document maintenance actions.

Hazardous Materials Management

• Use Hazardous Materials such as chemical sealants, oil, hydraulic fluid, transmission fluid, and other products, and perform proper handling and disposal of chemicals and petroleum products required during maintenance.
• Store, handle, label, use, and dispose of hazardous materials and hazardous waste.

Mechanical Operations

• Remove, disassemble, repair, clean, corrosion treatment, reassemble, and install malfunctioning CSE accessories and components.
• Stencil and mark support equipment.
• Prepare support equipment for preservation and mobility deployment.

Quality & Standards

• Verify and inspect work performed by other technicians for which qualified to perform.
• Practice good housekeeping, Tool Control, Foreign Object Damage (FOD) prevention, and safety awareness.
• Perform general housekeeping and organization of workstation(s), shop(s), and maintenance facility to provide a clean, safe, and FOD-free environment.

Field & Deployment Operations

• Conduct off-station maintenance when required.
• Deploy off-site as required to support Kuwait Air Force operations.
• Perform in-depth research, troubleshoot, and perform "O" level, "I" level, and commercial level maintenance functions on all applicable support equipment systems and components necessary to return equipment to Ready for Issue (RFI) status.
• Communicate directly with customers, pilots, air crew members, management, and maintenance personnel to gather and relay pertinent data and information necessary to ensure equipment is available to support aircraft launches and maintenance.

Development & Support

• Cross-train and support other maintenance technicians in completing assigned maintenance actions.
• Perform other duties and functions critical to the support of the program as necessary.

Qualifications & Experience

Education & Certifications

• High School Diploma required.
• Must obtain and maintain the following required certifications and qualifications: "I" Level and "O" Level Tire & Wheel certification, Hydraulic Contamination certification, Collateral Duty Inspector (CDI) qualification, Corrosion Prevention and Control and Aircraft Paint qualification, and "I" Level Battery Maintenance certification.
• Applicable Support Equipment licensing as required.

Experience

• Five years of hands-on aviation ground support equipment maintenance experience preferred.
• A combination of formal education, technical schools, and practical experience may be substituted.
• Naval Aviation Maintenance Program (NAMP) 4790.2 or equivalent experience with Air Force Instruction 21-101 preferred.
• Working knowledge of first aid procedures to be used in an emergency required.
• Strong knowledge base of aviation maintenance programs, processes, and procedures including Safety, Tool Control, HAZMAT, inspection programs, administrative requirements, support equipment, calibration and torque programs and procedures.
• In-depth knowledge of intermediate level maintenance business practices and procedures required.
• In-depth knowledge of applicable technical orders, job guides, and publications required; must read, interpret, follow, and comprehend schematic diagrams, drawings, charts, and technical publications.
• In-depth knowledge of flight line operations including aircraft and vehicle movement, safety, and hazards.

Skills & Competencies

Technical Skills

• Proficiency with digital multi-meters, voltmeters, ohmmeters, frequency counters, oscilloscopes, diagnosing software, circuit card testers, transistor testers, and hand tools.
• Expertise in hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, and electrical systems diagnosis and repair.
• Proficiency with automated maintenance data systems.
