Role Purpose
To provide targeted support for individual pupils within group and individual contexts, both inside and outside the classroom, enabling them to fully participate in school activities and access the curriculum. The role supports pupils with additional needs and contributes to the implementation and monitoring of their individual education programmes.
Key Responsibilities
Pupil Support & Participation
- Provide support for individual pupils within a group context or individually, both inside and outside of the classroom to enable them to fully participate in a range of activities during the school day.
- Support individual pupils in relation to their additional support needs including academic, physical, emotional, and behavioural difficulties.
- Help develop pupils' social and communication skills.
- Promote independence by teaching clear and meaningful strategies to students.
- Supervise individual pupils in the classroom, specialist lessons and other locations.
Academic Assistance
- Assist in the implementation of individual education programmes for pupils and link to the student's IEP goals.
- Contribute to the monitoring of pupil progress and attainment.
- Prepare necessary resources to assist identified students to access or differentiate the curriculum in order to support learning.
- Provide individual instruction as prescribed by the teacher or group instruction where appropriate.
- Demonstrate various instructional activities.
- Monitor work assigned by the teacher, checking and correcting individual student work in line with school policy while in progress.
- Keep individual pupils and peers on task.
- Praise and reinforce the achievements of pupils and report pupil progress to the teacher.
- Prepare materials for individual pupils as needed to scaffold their classroom learning.
Professional Collaboration & Communication
- Build a close working relationship with home room and subject teachers and communicate regularly and openly.
- Work with other professionals such as speech therapists, occupational therapists and others as needed.
- Attend and deliver intervention for speech and language therapy, occupational therapy and ABA therapy to help generalise and consolidate target skills, maximising the impact of therapy.
- Adhere to guidelines of confidentiality, respecting that the Head of Inclusion, home room and subject teachers are responsible for formal communications with parents.
Behaviour & Discipline
- Participate in development of behaviour policy and promote pupils' self-esteem and discipline misbehaviour in line with whole school policy.
Record-Keeping & Resources
- Assist home room and subject teachers with maintaining pupil records.
Professional Development & Leadership
- Attend training sessions and professionals' meetings as required.
- Experienced Inclusion Assistants may be asked to mentor new staff; new staff may be asked to participate in mentoring.
General Duties
- Be proactive in matters relating to health and safety.
- Support the aims of the school, comply with the requirements of health and safety, code of conduct and other relevant legislation and school policies.
- Set a good example in terms of dress, punctuality and attendance.
- Attend extra-curricular activities and trips and visits.
- Undertake other duties as required by the Principal or Head of Inclusion.
Qualifications & Experience
- SEN qualification: Diploma.
- Minimum 2 years SEN experience.
- At least 2 years experience in a school setting.
- English language skills according to the school curriculum.

- Recent and consistent involvement in extra-curricular activities.
