Role Overview
HYCO Supervisor at Air Products. This position manages and supervises operations staff at a facility housing two HYCO Steam Methane Reformer units, one Off-Gas PSA facility, and a Hydrogen Import Pipeline Facility.

Role Purpose
The HYCO Shift Supervisor is accountable for managing day-to-day shift operations, supervising Boardman, Lead Operators, and Field Operators, and ensuring safe and reliable facility operations. The role interfaces with Maintenance and Engineering teams to achieve daily operational targets and customer production goals while ensuring operations staff are properly trained to execute all plant tasks safely.
Key Responsibilities
Safety
- Provide and maintain a safe work environment.
- Demonstrate leadership with all company and industry safe work processes to prevent injuries.
- Ensure the safety of all operations personnel by utilizing the APQ Basic Safety Practice program, which includes Safety Work Permits, LOTO, and Confined Space procedures.
- Facilitate planning, organizing, auditing, and follow-up to build Air Products safety culture into APQ.
Technical Operations
- Provide direction to staff of the HYCO Steam Methane Reformer unit and ancillary equipment as prescribed by Work Instruction Procedures.
- Operate the unit when required.
- Provide direction and guidance based on technical feedback from Assistant Site Manager, Site Manager, Engineering, and Maintenance for troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, and test activities.
- Lead the team during startups, shutdowns, and emergencies.
- Maintain accurate document control and monitor quality assurance initiatives.
- Provide Operations guidance to ensure safety, reliability, and maintainability of equipment, processes, utilities, facilities, controls, and safety/security systems.
- Provide Operations input for scheduled outages to ensure contractual requirements are achieved.
- Manage plant production efficiently based on data-driven decisions to ensure safety and reliability targets are met and maximum profitability is achieved.
- Work closely with Shift Team, Assistant Site Manager, Site Manager, Maintenance Team, and Engineering team to ensure production targets are achieved during the shift, plant running at optimum energy efficiency, and safe operations.
Compliance & Environmental
- Ensure all Environmental Regulatory requirements are met.
- Ensure compliance to all CM and PM tasks.
- Ensure Air Products and APQ standards and global best practices for EH&S, productivity, reliability, quality, and overall customer services are met.
Planning & Coordination
- Support and prepare for Shutdown Planning and Turnaround Planning.
- Establish and maintain close working relationships with engineering and maintenance personnel to continuously monitor and evaluate plant systems and equipment through a Plant Process Advisory Model.
- Maintain a relationship with customer counterparts from other Refinery Units where APQ receives Feedstock, Utilities & Power or supplies Hydrogen and Steam through the Refinery Shift Superintendent to ensure alignment of expectations for current and future product demand.
Customer & Stakeholder Management
- Meet customer satisfaction on safety, reliability, product quality, and flexibility on product supply.
- Act as the Single Point of Contact when dealing with internal issues of the HYCO units, representing APQ and coordinating internal resources.
- Provide timely progress updates to the customer.
- Ability to communicate and manage customer interactions on a daily basis.
Incident Management & Continuous Improvement
- Provide operations support and participate in or lead incident investigations and Root Cause Analysis.
- Identify and implement sustainable corrective actions.
- Facilitate attainment of operations excellence and customer satisfaction via operations productivity, reliability, quality, cost reduction, services, continuous improvements, and meeting of budgets.
People Development & Leadership
- Provide coaching and motivation to the operations team to achieve operational excellence and customer satisfaction.
- Develop, train, and promote top-performing personnel who achieve success through teams, customer and employee focused approaches, foster open communication, performance-driven mindset, and results-oriented culture.
- Build the plant technical capability through support coordination from Assistant Site Manager, Site Manager, Maintenance Team, and Engineering team.
- Promote a 'one team' environment.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Chemical Process Operations preferred. An associate technical degree (2-year certificate) will be considered based on years of experience and competence.
- Experience in gas, petrochemical, or related industries in operations, engineering, and/or maintenance functions.
- Minimum of 10 years' experience with 4 or more years in line supervision of process operations roles.
- Demonstrated HYCO knowledge is a plus.
- Expectation based on level of experience for the operations team to achieve a 'Level 1/Board Level' status within 2β4 years.
- Proven coordination experience in a multi-team environment which includes operations, engineering, and maintenance.
Skills & Competencies
- Wide technical knowledge in operations, engineering, and maintenance activities.
- Good leadership, interpersonal, and teamwork skills with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively throughout all levels within the organization and externally.
- Proficiency in English speaking and writing.
- Knowledge and understanding of local environmental and health and safety requirements.
Additional Information
- The HYCO Operations Supervisor is an extension of the operating team and is expected to engage in plant operations when required.
- Operators will be evaluated during the training period and placed at the level of competence accordingly.
- All operations team are considered field and board operators when Level 1 is achieved.
- Leadership positions are expected to follow the progression process.
