Role Overview

HYCO Shift Supervisor at Air Products. This is a shift-based supervisory role responsible for directing operations of the HYCO Steam Methane Reformer unit and ensuring safe, reliable, efficient plant performance.

Role Purpose

Lead shift operations of the HYCO Steam Methane Reformer unit and ancillary equipment. Direct staff in executing work instruction procedures, troubleshoot technical issues, and coordinate across operations, engineering, and maintenance teams to meet safety, reliability, regulatory, and production targets while maintaining customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities

Safety

  • Provide and maintain a safe work environment and demonstrate leadership aligned with company and industry safe work processes to prevent injuries.
  • Ensure the safety of all operations personnel by utilizing the APQ Basic Safety Practice program, which includes Safety Work Permits, LOTO, and Confined Space procedures.
  • Facilitate planning, organizing, auditing, and follow-up to build Air Products safety culture into APQ.
  • Personally inspect all Active Leaks each shift and update any degradation in shift reports.

Technical Operations

  • Provide direction to the staff of the HYCO Steam Methane Reformer unit and ancillary equipment as prescribed by Work Instruction Procedures.
  • Operate the unit when required.
  • Provide direction and guidance based on technical feedback from Assistant Site Manager, Site Manager, Engineering, and Maintenance for troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, and test activities.
  • Provide Operations support, guidance, and leadership during startups, shutdowns, and plant emergencies.
  • Provide Operations guidance to ensure safety, reliability, and maintainability of equipment, processes, utilities, facilities, controls, and safety/security systems.
  • Manage plant production efficiently based on data-driven decisions to ensure safety and reliability targets are met and maximum profitability is achieved.
  • Work closely with Shift Team, Assistant Site Manager, Site Manager, Maintenance Team, and Engineering team to ensure production targets are achieved during the shift, plant runs at optimum energy efficiency, and all operations remain safe.

Compliance & Regulatory

  • Ensure all Environmental Regulatory requirements are met.
  • Ensure compliance to all Corrective Maintenance (CM) and Preventive Maintenance (PM) tasks.
  • Ensure Air Products and APQ standards and global best practices for Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S), productivity, reliability, quality, and overall customer service are met.
  • Maintain knowledge and understanding of local environmental and health and safety requirements.
  • Fully account for the accuracy and compliance of personal logs and operator logs against published matrix.
  • View all IOW Event Manager Logs daily and ensure proper actions have been taken.
  • Audit, review, and assign action daily for operator logs.
  • Implement issued mitigation plans for all Emergency and High-level (Safety Risk/Environment Risk/Availability Risk/Utilization Risk/Energy Risk) log items.

Planning & Outages

  • Provide Operations input for scheduled outages to ensure contractual requirements are achieved.
  • Support and prepare for Shutdown Planning and Turnaround Planning.
  • Complete the team's Work List on daily, weekly, monthly, and annual basis.

Customer & Stakeholder Management

  • Meet customer satisfaction on safety, reliability, product quality, and flexibility on product supply.
  • Act as the Single Point of Contact when dealing with internal issues of the HYCO units, representing APQ and coordinating internal resources.
  • Provide timely progress updates to the customer.
  • Maintain relationships with the customer's counterparts from other Refinery Units that supply feedstock, utilities, power, or receive hydrogen and steam from APQ through the Refinery Shift Superintendent to ensure alignment of expectations for current and future product demand.
  • Communicate and manage customer interactions on a daily basis.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Provide coaching and motivation to the operations team to achieve operational excellence and customer satisfaction.
  • Develop, train, and promote top-performing personnel who achieve success through team-focused, customer-focused, and employee-focused approaches.
  • Foster open communication, performance-driven, and results-oriented culture.
  • Promote a 'one team' environment.
  • Build plant technical capability through support coordination from Assistant Site Manager, Site Manager, Maintenance Team, and Engineering team.

Continuous Improvement & Monitoring

  • Maintain accurate document control and monitor quality assurance initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain close working relationships with engineering and maintenance personnel to continuously monitor and evaluate plant systems and equipment through a Plant Process Advisory Model.
  • Provide operations support and participate in or lead incident investigations and Root Cause Analysis.
  • Identify and implement sustainable corrective actions.
  • Facilitate attainment of operations excellence and customer satisfaction via operations productivity, reliability, quality, cost reduction, services, continuous improvements, and meeting of budgets.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Chemical Process Operations preferred; an Associate technical degree (2-year certificate) will be considered based on years of experience and competence.
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience in gas, petrochemical, or related industries in operations, engineering, and/or a maintenance function.
  • Minimum of 4+ years in line supervision of process operations roles.
  • Demonstrated HYCO knowledge a plus.
  • Proven coordination experience in a multi-team environment which includes operations, engineering, and maintenance.
  • Expected to achieve 'Level 1 / Board Level' status within 2–4 years based on level of experience; operators will be evaluated during the training period and placed at the level of competence accordingly.

Skills & Competencies

  • Good leadership, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively throughout all levels within the organization and externally.
  • Wide technical knowledge in operations, engineering, and maintenance activities.
  • Proficiency in English speaking and writing.
  • Ability to engage in plant operations when required.

Additional Information

  • The HYCO Operations Supervisor is an extension of the operating team and is expected to engage in plant operations when required.
  • All operations team members are considered field and board operators when Level 1 is achieved; leadership positions are expected to follow the progression process.
