Firefighter Driver Operator

Role Overview

Firefighter Driver Operator position with V2X, physically located in Kuwait in support of WEXMAC.

Role Purpose

Perform specialized duty work functions in preparing for and responding to fire and medical emergency calls. Provide support to paramedics and Advanced Life Support EMTs requiring emergency medical care. Safely transport patients to hospitals or medical clinics. Maintain emergency readiness, educate staff and public on fire safety and prevention, and perform Fire Department activities. This position may involve staffing the Fire Alarm Communications Center to receive emergency calls, monitor fire alarm systems, and dispatch appropriate apparatus and personnel.

Key Responsibilities

Emergency Response

• Respond to emergency calls and provide support to paramedics in accordance with EMS protocols.
• Assist other members of the department during emergency response.
• Provide support to the paramedic for immediate care to the critically ill and injured.
• Transport patients to the designated ambulance transfer point.
• Provide pre-hospital emergency medical care for simple and multiple system injuries and illnesses.

Vehicle and Equipment Operations

• Safely operate and drive fire department vehicles, including engines, ladder trucks, and other specialized apparatus to emergency incidents in compliance with all traffic laws and department policies.
• Position apparatus at emergency scenes strategically to maximize effectiveness for fire suppression, rescue operations, and water supply, considering structural stability, collapse zones, and overhead hazards.
• Operate fire pumps to supply water at the correct pressure and volume to attack lines, ensuring continuous and reliable water supply for interior and exterior firefighting crews.
• Execute complex hydraulic calculations to account for friction loss, elevation, and appliance requirements, adjusting pump pressures accordingly to meet incident demands.
• Deploy and operate aerial devices, such as ladders and platforms, for rescue, elevated water streams, ventilation, and overhaul operations, ensuring stability and safety at all times.
• Establish a secure and uninterrupted water supply by connecting to fire hydrants, drafting from static sources (lakes, pools, rivers), or coordinating water shuttle and tanker operations.

Maintenance and Readiness

• Maintain vehicles and equipment in a serviceable and ready condition.
• Conduct daily, weekly, and monthly inspections and operational readiness checks on assigned apparatus, including engine systems, pumps, aerial devices, fluid levels, and onboard equipment.

Training and Communication

• Participate in continuing medical education (CME) and training activities, both as an instructor and as a student, depending on the nature and purpose of the course.
• Communicate effectively in writing, verbally, and over the radio or telephone.

Compliance and General Duties

• Comply with all applicable rules, regulations, and standard operating procedures as directed by the Fire Chief, Program Manager, and Base Commander.
• Perform various other tasks as assigned by the Fire Chief or designee.
• Perform other duties and assignments as needed.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• Associate's degree is preferred.
• Two years' related experience may be substituted for one year of education if a degree is required.

Certifications

• IFSAC or Pro-Board Certification required at the following levels:
• National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) or State EMT
• Healthcare Provider CPR/BLS/AED
• Firefighter I
• Firefighter II
• Hazardous Materials Operations
• Airport Firefighter
• Driver/Operator Pumper
• Driver/Operator Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting
• Driver/Operator Mobile Water Supply
• Telecommunicator I/II
• Must be eligible and able to obtain and maintain Installation Access.
• Able to obtain a host nation driver's license.

Experience

• Minimum two years of experience working on an emergency response ambulance.
• Minimum two years of experience in an emergency health care setting.
• Extensive firefighting and emergency service experience of five years.
• Must be in good standing with their certifying organization and maintain all certifications for the duration of employment.

Skills & Competencies

• Read, write, and speak English fluently.
• Excellent communicative skills, both written and verbal.
• Possess knowledge of safety and environmental issues.
• Be familiar with various Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).

Additional Information

Physical Requirements

• Must have the ability to lift and carry a minimum of 45 pounds.
• Must be able to collectively lift, carry, and balance patients who weigh in excess of 100 pounds.
• Must have the ability to pull and reach with both hands; crawl, kneel, bend and climb.
• Must be able to work outdoors in excessive heat or cold, high humidity or dry atmospheric conditions.
• Will be exposed to lifting, pulling, and numerous strenuous activities that paramedics face during medical response calls.
• Will be required to perform strenuous work activities in extremely hot and humid or cold conditions during certain parts of the year or time of day.

Working Conditions

• Must be capable of working in various weather conditions including humidity, rain and wet season, warm and hot, and sunny conditions.
• Worker is subject to atmospheric conditions including one or more of the following that affect the respiratory system or skin: fumes, odors, dust, mist, gases, or poor ventilation.
