Role Overview

Faculty in Nautical Science/ Maritime Transport at Sharjah Maritime Academy. This is a full-time academic position (FSHC/ 250925/13).

Role Purpose

Deliver high-quality maritime education aligned with STCW II/I requirements, conduct research to support career development, and assist the Head of Maritime Transport Program in fulfilling the Academy's strategic priorities as a research-active institution.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching & Curriculum

• Teach a range of subjects including Navigation, Cargo Operations, Bridge Management, and other related topics relating to STCW II/I requirements as directed by the Head.
• Use appropriate, innovative and effective pedagogic approaches in the classroom.
• Deliver lectures and lead seminar groups as appropriate.
• Deliver maritime training courses as required by the Line Manager.

Assessment & Learning Development

• Participate in the examination and assessment process including setting papers, preparing marking schemes, and agreeing marks with other staff.
• Use appropriate and innovative forms of assessment practices to enhance learning and teaching.
• Provide timely, constructive, formative and comprehensive feedback to students using all forms of communication.

Professional Development & Research

• Conduct research for career development, aligning with the Academy's ambition to be a research-active institution.
• Ensure responsibility for updating own discipline knowledge to develop research-informed teaching.

Compliance & Operations

• Ensure full compliance with the requirements of the timetable and the annual academic calendar.
• Assist Head of Maritime Transport Program as required to fulfil the Academy's strategic priorities.
• Be prepared to travel as required and occasionally work outside of standard working hours as in the contract.

Qualifications & Experience

Education

• Master of Science or equivalent Master level qualification in relevant subject (Essential).

Certifications

• STCW Class 1 Certificate of Competency (Master Mariner Unlimited) (Essential).

Experience

• Maritime education and/or training experience (Essential).
• Sailed as a Master on merchant ships (Preferred).
• Experience of working in an industry supporting seafaring (Preferred).
• Educational experience with leading courses/programs, revising course content, developing new programs and courses (Preferred).
• Experience of oil/gas operations, dynamic positioning, and simulation training (Preferred).
• Familiarity with learning technologies (LMS, online assessment, academic integrity tools) (Preferred).
