Endoscopy Technician

Role Overview

Endoscopy Technician at NMC Healthcare. The role supports diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures in a hospital-based endoscopy department.

Role Purpose

To schedule, arrange, and assist in all aspects of endoscopy procedures while maintaining the highest standards of patient safety, infection control, equipment management, and occupational health and safety.

Key Responsibilities

Procedure Support & Scheduling

• Schedule endoscopy procedures, including emergency procedures.
• Arrange the endoscopy room for procedures and verify that all arrangements are appropriate and safe for the individual patient.
• Assist patients with positioning during procedures.

Diagnostic & Therapeutic Assistance

• Assist in diagnostic procedures including Esophageal Gastroduodenoscopy, Colonoscopy, Flexible Sigmoidoscopy, and Bronchoscopy.
• Assist in therapeutic procedures including Esophageal Variceal Banding, Sclerotherapy Injection, Polypectomy (Upper/Lower GI scope), Balloon dilatation for strictures, Hemosclerotherapy, Argon Plasma Coagulation, Hemoclip, Foreign Body Removal, Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy, Gastric Balloon Insertion, Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (Cannulation, Sphincterotomy, Stone Extraction, Stricture Dilatation, Stone Crushing, Stenting), Biopsy, CLO test, and H Pylori Culture test.

Equipment Preparation & Maintenance

• Prepare endoscopes and accessories for use.
• Prepare the ERBE Machine.
• Prepare the Water Irrigation System.
• Prime the ETD machine and ERBE Machine.
• Ensure maintenance and proper operation of equipment and supplies in work areas.
• Disinfect and store endoscopes and accessories.
• Maintain records for the disinfection and culture of endoscopes and ETD Machine.
• Maintain Endoscopic Accessories Store Record.

Documentation & Software Management

• Upload and print patient data using Endobase Software.

Patient Care & Confidentiality

• Perform all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/healthcare errors.
• Treat patients and their families with respect and dignity.
• Identify and address psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.
• Provide patient privacy and maintain confidentiality.
• Ensure awareness of patient rights.
• Provide a safe environment free from any form of discrimination and harassment.

Occupational Health & Safety

• Work in accordance with documented Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) procedures and instructions.
• Be familiar with emergency and evacuation procedures.
• Report OSH hazards, incidents, near misses, and issues.
• Assist with the preparation of risk assessments and incident reports.
• Use appropriate personal protective equipment and safety systems.
• Comply with reasonable OSH instructions, policies, and safe working procedures.
• Not willfully or recklessly endanger anyone's health and safety.
• Attend applicable OSH and Infection Control training programs, mock drills, and awareness programs.
• Participate in OSHMS audits and inspections to ensure standards are maintained.

Infection Prevention & Control

• Implement the NMC Patient Cleanliness and Infection Prevention Policy and Strategy to maintain the highest possible standards of cleanliness and reduce the risk of infection in patients, staff, and visitors.
• Adhere to the strictest hand hygiene protocols, including the 5 moments of hand hygiene and bare below the elbows standard.
• Maintain environmental care standards at all times.

Compliance & Monitoring

• Monitor compliance with policy and procedure.
• Comply with waste management procedures and policies.
• Reduce, reuse, and recycle waste as much as possible.
• Demonstrate the ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract variables.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor's Degree in Endoscopy Technology.
• Two years of experience as an Endoscopy Technician in a hospital setup.

Skills & Competencies

• Excellent knowledge of the Endoscopy Technician field.
• Excellent communication skills with good command of written and spoken English.
• Ability to follow specific instructions with a high degree of accuracy during procedures.
• Excellent computer skills.
