Role Purpose
The Dredge Mechanic ensures the smooth operation of the cutter suction dredger and its machinery through hands-on maintenance, repair, and oversight of mechanical systems. This role requires deep understanding of marine engineering principles and close collaboration with the dredging crew to optimize equipment performance and minimize operational downtime.
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance & Repair
- Perform routine maintenance and inspections on dredging equipment, including pumps, engines, and hydraulic systems.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical issues promptly, ensuring minimal downtime for the dredger.
- Install and maintain new equipment as per the dredging project's requirements.
- Assist in the development and implementation of maintenance schedules and procedures.
Operations & Safety
- Oversee the safe operation of all mechanical systems and implement necessary safety protocols.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant safety regulations and environmental standards.
Team & Knowledge Management
- Collaborate with the dredging crew to optimize equipment performance and efficiency.
- Train and supervise junior mechanics or deckhands on basic maintenance tasks.
- Stay updated with the latest advancements in dredging technology and best practices.
Documentation
- Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities and repairs.
Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum 5 years of experience as a mechanic, preferably in a marine or dredging environment.
- Strong background in mechanical engineering or a related field.
- Familiarity with cutter suction dredgers and their unique mechanical systems.
Skills & Competencies
- Excellent troubleshooting skills and problem-solving mindset.
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions under pressure.
- Good physical condition and ability to work in a dynamic, outdoor environment.
