Consultant Physician-General Medicine

Role Overview

Consultant Physician-General Medicine at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC). This is an inpatient general medicine role.

Role Purpose

Lead and supervise the delivery of high-quality evidence-based care, effectively diagnosing, managing and treating all patients under the post holder's care. Serve as an example of clinical excellence within general medicine and provide leadership and training for junior medical staff.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Practice

• Diagnose and treat patients according to established standards of best practice for general medicine.
• Lead ward rounds and reassess both inpatients and outpatients on a regular basis in line with established best practice.
• Accept clinically appropriate referrals from the Emergency Department, primary care, other departments, specialty clinics, walk-in patients, and patients referred from other hospitals.
• Ensure preparation of patients for all procedures including obtaining informed consent.
• Communicate clinical information to patients and the patient's family and friends (with the consent of the patient) in a timely manner.
• Comply with all established hospital policies regarding admissions, consultations, daily patient care, surgical procedures, discharge protocols, outpatient and follow-up practices.
• Practice appropriate utilization of the organization's resources.
• Accurately document all relevant clinical information in a clear and timely fashion in accordance with established procedures.
• Regularly review results of all investigations and modify treatment as required.
• Liaise with other medical specialties and support services for additional input as required.
• Participate in and ensure the provision of on-call coverage on a rotational basis including evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays as required.
• Perform other clinical duties as assigned.

Supervision & Oversight

• Oversee the clinical activities of the junior medical staff and assume responsibility for the care they provide.

Multidisciplinary & Collaborative Care

• Actively participate in multi-disciplinary meetings to help plan effective, safe and holistic care for individual patients.
• Maintain a good working relationship with members of staff and promote collaboration and a team-based approach to patient care.

Quality Improvement & Audit

• Help lead quality improvement within the Department.
• Support a culture of regular audit and encourage the use of audit results for improving clinical practice.
• Support the reporting, investigation, and response to untoward incidents.

Leadership & Development

• Foster a culture of learning, development and continuous improvement across the Department by promoting and assisting in the instruction, guidance and supervision of junior medical staff.
• Facilitate the provision of essential training relevant to clinical staff in the specialty.
• Show commitment to Continued Medical Education (CME).
• Promote and participate in clinical research and publication.
• Keep abreast of current, relevant literature and the latest trends and technologies in the industry.

Performance Management & Administration

• Support, implement, and follow all hospital, departmental and divisional initiatives, policies and procedures.
• Help lead and implement the organization's performance management system, including peer review and the productivity and utilization review processes.
• Participate in the organization's performance management system, including peer review and the productivity and utilization review processes.
• Assist with scheduling and support the Division Chief in ensuring that adequate medical coverage is provided within the Division at all times.
• Attend Divisional meetings as required.
• Assist the Division Chief in the recruitment of new medical staff when appropriate.
• Assume other administrative or clinical duties as requested by the Division Chief.

Compliance & Regulatory

• Comply consistently with facility policies, procedures, and practices and ensure alignment with SSMC facilities policies.
• Complete and maintain regulatory requirements including licensure and certification and other mandatory training within established time frames.
• Maintain confidentiality in accordance with SSMC compliance guidelines.

Qualifications & Experience

Required Experience

• Tier 1: Not less than 2 years relevant experience as a consultant or equivalent post board certification.
• Tier 2: Not less than 8 years full-time employment as a Consultant or equivalent post-board certification (includes years in fellowship training) in an internationally accredited institute.

For UAE Nationals

• Clinical Fellowship training following primary specialty board may substitute for experience as follows:
• Each year of clinical fellowship is counted as two years of clinical experience.
• Only applicable to clinical subspecialty fellowship in the following countries: Australia, New Zealand, Canada, UK, USA, or HAAD accredited fellowship programs.

Required Education

• Qualification from Tier 1 OR Qualification from Tier 2.
• Current national license or equivalent.
• Certified proof of yearly CME.

Additional Information

• Rotational on-call coverage required including evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays.
