Consultant Physician-Emergency

Role Overview

Consultant Physician-Emergency at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC). The role is based at SSMC facilities.

Role Purpose

Lead and supervise the delivery of high-quality evidence-based emergency care. Diagnose, manage, and treat all patients under your care with clinical excellence. Provide leadership and training to junior medical staff.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Delivery

• Diagnose and treat patients according to established standards of best practice for emergency medicine.
• Lead ward rounds and reassess both inpatients and outpatients regularly in line with established best practice.
• Accept clinically appropriate referrals from the Emergency Department, primary care, other departments, specialty clinics, walk-in patients, and patients referred from other hospitals.
• Ensure preparation of patients for all procedures including obtaining informed consent.
• Communicate clinical information to patients and the patient's family and friends (with the patient's consent) in a timely manner.
• Regularly review results of all investigations and modify treatment as required.
• Liaise with other medical specialties and support services for additional input as required.
• Participate in and provide on-call coverage on a rotational basis including evenings, nights, weekends, and public holidays as required.
• Perform other clinical duties as assigned.

Oversight & Supervision

• Oversee the clinical activities of junior medical staff and assume responsibility for the care they provide.
• Promote and assist in the instruction, guidance, and supervision of junior medical staff.
• Facilitate the provision of essential training relevant to clinical staff in the specialty.

Governance & Compliance

• Support, implement, and follow all hospital, departmental, and divisional initiatives, policies, and procedures.
• Comply with all established hospital policies regarding admissions, consultations, daily patient care, surgical procedures, discharge protocols, outpatient and follow-up practices.
• Comply consistently with facility policies, procedures, and practices and ensure alignment with SSMC facilities policies.
• Complete and maintain regulatory requirements including licensure and certification and other mandatory training within established timeframes.
• Accurately document all relevant clinical information in a clear and timely fashion in accordance with established procedures.

Performance Management & Quality

• Help lead and implement the organization's performance management system, including peer review and the productivity and utilization review processes.
• Participate in the organization's performance management system, including peer review and the productivity and utilization review processes.
• Help lead quality improvement within the Department.
• Support a culture of regular audit and encourage the use of audit results for improving clinical practice.
• Support the reporting, investigation, and response to untoward incidents.

Resource Management

• Practice appropriate utilization of the organization's resources.
• Assist with scheduling and support the Division Chief in ensuring adequate medical coverage is provided within the Division at all times.

Organizational Contribution

• Attend Divisional meetings as required.
• Assist the Division Chief in the recruitment of new medical staff when appropriate.
• Assume other administrative or clinical duties as requested by the Division Chief.
• Maintain a good working relationship with members of staff and promote collaboration and a team-based approach to patient care.

Education & Development

• Foster a culture of learning, development, and continuous improvement across the Department.
• Show commitment to Continued Medical Education (CME).
• Keep abreast of current, relevant literature and the latest trends and technologies in the industry.
• Promote and participate in clinical research and publication.

Stakeholder Management

• Actively participate in multi-disciplinary meetings to help plan effective, safe, and holistic care for individual patients.

Qualifications & Experience

Required Experience

• Tier 1: Not less than 2 years relevant experience as a consultant or equivalent post-board certification.
• Tier 2: Not less than 8 years full-time employment as a Consultant or equivalent post-board certification (includes years in fellowship training) in an internationally accredited institute.

For UAE Nationals: Clinical Fellowship training following primary specialty board may substitute for experience as follows—each year of clinical fellowship is counted as two years of clinical experience. Only applicable to clinical subspecialty fellowship in the following countries: Australia, New Zealand, Canada, UK, USA, or HAAD accredited fellowship programs.

Required Education

• Qualification from Tier 1 OR Qualification from Tier 2.
• Current national license or equivalent.
• Certified proof of yearly CME.
