Biomedical Engineer (Emirati National)

Role Overview

Biomedical Engineer position at King's College Hospital London. This role is open to Emirati Nationals.

Role Purpose

To manage, maintain, and optimize medical equipment and biomedical devices across the hospital, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, patient safety, and operational efficiency through procurement support, preventive maintenance, asset management, and clinical staff training.

Key Responsibilities

Procurement & Specification

• Support the procurement of equipment process including quotations, tenders, and comparison charts.
• Write specifications for all new equipment and machinery.
• Evaluate equipment and machinery based on initial and operating costs.
• Participate in technical evaluations and equipment selection to support medical equipment procurement.

Asset & Inventory Management

• Develop and maintain an asset register of all equipment.
• Maintain inventory systems and medical equipment documentation.
• Maintain records including equipment history.
• Monitor equipment performance and contribute to asset management, replacement planning, and lifecycle management initiatives.

Maintenance & Repairs

• Manage and oversee replacement and repair programs.
• Attend to service and maintenance defects and coordinate with vendors.
• Conduct preventive maintenance, handling spare parts, technical defects, and clinical demands.
• Perform preventive maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and repair of medical equipment in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and regulatory requirements.
• Conduct equipment inspections, acceptance testing, and commissioning of newly acquired medical devices.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records, service reports, and equipment inventories using computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).

Project Coordination

• Arrange proper project milestones including delivery, installation, training, commissioning, and testing.
• Coordinate with clinical departments, vendors, and service providers to ensure timely resolution of equipment-related issues.

Compliance & Safety

• Initiate policies as per local regulations.
• Set standards and ensure compliance.
• Participate actively in safety committees and check for safety hazards.
• Ensure compliance with local regulatory requirements, hospital policies, accreditation standards, and medical device safety regulations.
• Identify and report environmental hazards or unsafe equipment, follow equipment-safety guidelines and report malfunctions promptly.
• Investigate equipment failures, incidents, and safety concerns, implementing corrective actions where required.
• Follow all safety, quality, infection-control awareness and risk-management procedures; report safety events and near misses; participate in workplace violence-prevention training; and escalate concerns using approved communication tools such as Situation–Background–Assessment–Recommendation (SBAR).
• Participate in emergency drills (fire, major incidents, communicable diseases and pandemics) and understand assigned roles during emergencies.
• Participate in quality improvement, risk management, and patient safety programs.
• Participate in audits, quality-improvement activities and performance reviews to support continuous organizational improvement.

Training & Support

• Arrange training programs for clinical engineering personnel and end users.
• Advise and provide expertise to medical staff and administration.
• Provide technical guidance and user training to clinical and operational staff on the safe use of medical equipment.
• Support and guide junior team members, offering advice and assistance if required.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering or related Engineering discipline.
• Minimum 2–5 years of experience in biomedical engineering within a hospital or healthcare environment.
• Prior UAE experience in biomedical device and equipment management processes.
• Has worked within an appropriate service environment within the last 4 years.
• Strong technical knowledge of medical equipment, including critical care, operating theatre, imaging, laboratory, and patient monitoring devices.
• Familiarity with healthcare accreditation standards, medical device regulations, and maintenance best practices.

Skills & Competencies

• Strong technical knowledge of medical equipment and biomedical devices.
• Proficiency with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and hospital information systems preferred.
• Awareness and understanding of KCH policies and KCH initiatives.
• Possesses a good grasp of medical terminology, enabling accurate communication, documentation, and coordination within a clinical or healthcare setting.
• Proficient in basic computer applications, including MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), with the ability to manage digital documentation and communication effectively.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, patients, and stakeholders.
• Ability to handle sensitive information with a high level of confidentiality and discretion, ensuring compliance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.
