Role Purpose

The Common Support Equipment Technician diagnoses malfunctions and repairs Common Support Equipment (CSE), inspects and approves completed maintenance actions, and solves repair problems by studying drawings, wiring diagrams, Original Equipment Manufacturer manuals, technical publications and maintenance actions. The role requires use of automated maintenance data systems to monitor trends, analyze equipment requirements, and document actions.

Key Responsibilities

Diagnosis and Repair

• Diagnose malfunctions and perform corrective actions on all required support equipment.
• Disassemble, inspect, evaluate and accomplish necessary repairs according to technical instructions and directives.
• Determine requirements for repairs, modifications and part replacements.
• Verify work performed by others for which qualified to perform.
• Troubleshoot, repair, rework and maintain hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical and electrical systems.
• Remove, adjust, repair and replace functional components while incorporating applicable technical directives and bulletins.
• Perform close tolerance adjustment, repair and rework of equipment in and out of shop area.

Maintenance Standards and Compliance

• Review, interpret and apply assigned maintenance manual procedures in support of maintenance actions.
• Read and interpret manufacturers' maintenance manuals, service bulletins, technical data, engineering data and specifications to determine feasibility and method of repair or replacement.
• Perform "O", "I" and authorized commercial repair of all CSE, Material Handling Equipment (MHE) and Palletized Systems Equipment (PSE) in accordance with KAF 4790.2 and applicable maintenance manuals.
• Perform scheduled, unscheduled and hourly or calendar inspections in accordance with KAF 4790.2 and applicable publications.
• Ensure accurate entry of data into locally used computer database systems to document maintenance actions, monitor trends, analyze equipment requirements and maintain equipment records.

Equipment Operations and Service

• Analyze, diagnose and repair CSE using conventional and digital multi-meters, voltmeters, ohmmeters, frequency counters, oscilloscopes, circuit card testers, transistor testers and hand tools.
• Diagnose mechanical and electronic circuitry malfunctions using visual and auditory senses, test equipment and technical maintenance data sources.
• Operate, clean, inspect and service all assigned support equipment, including towing vehicles such as Bobtail Ford trucks, Tow Tractors (Tug) and U-30 aircraft tow vehicle.
• Service equipment with required fluids including oil, water, coolant, hydraulic fluid, refrigerant and compressed air.
• Service, inspect and test aviation support equipment used for direct and indirect aircraft support.
• Troubleshoot, inspect, service, test and condition storage batteries including lead-acid, gel and sealed type.

Parts and Materials Management

• Apply practical knowledge of wiring schematics and interpretation of technical data contained within schematics and maintenance data sources.
• Use illustrated parts breakdowns (IPBs) to determine material requirements, research associated part numbers and requisition repair parts, materials and consumable supplies through supply systems.
• Use and handle Hazardous Materials such as chemical sealants, oil, hydraulic fluid and transmission fluid.
• Perform proper handling and disposal of chemicals and petroleum products required during maintenance.
• Perform stenciling and marking of CSE.
• Store, handle, label, use and dispose of hazardous materials and hazardous waste.

Preservation and Deployment

• Perform removal, disassembly, repair, cleaning, corrosion treatment, re-assembly and installation of malfunctioning CSE accessories and components.
• Perform Corrosion Control/Prevention, Preservation and de-preservation of Support Equipment.
• Prepare CSE for preservation and mobility deployment.

Facility and Safety Management

• Perform general housekeeping and organization of workstation(s), shop(s) and maintenance facility to provide a clean, safe and FOD (Foreign Object Damage) free environment.
• Practice good housekeeping, Tool Control and Foreign Object Damage prevention at all times.
• Maintain safety standards at all times.
• Conduct off-station maintenance when required.
• Perform other duties and supervisory functions critical to program function and compliance with the Performance Work Statement (PWS) when necessary.

Qualifications & Experience

• Must be a United States citizen.
• Graduation from a standard four-year high school or equivalent (GED).
• Must be able to obtain a United States Passport with at least 24 months of time remaining before expiration.
• Five years of hands-on aviation ground support equipment maintenance experience preferred; a combination of formal education, technical schools and practical experience may be substituted.
• Strong knowledge base of aviation maintenance procedures including safety, tool control, HAZMAT, Inspection programs, Administrative requirements, support equipment and calibration/torque procedures.
• In-depth knowledge of technical orders, job guides and publications; ability to read, interpret, follow and comprehend schematic diagrams, drawings, charts and technical publications.
• Strong knowledge base of Intermediate Level Maintenance business procedures.
• Ability to read, write and understand the English language.

Skills & Competencies

• Analyze, diagnose and repair using conventional and digital multi-meters, voltmeters, ohmmeters, frequency counters, oscilloscopes, circuit card testers and transistor testers.
• Proficiency with hand tools.
• Working knowledge of computer systems; ability to input and extract data.
• Current civilian driver's license and ability to obtain and maintain a government flight line driver's license.
• Ability to overcome cultural differences, think outside the box and innovate to solve complex problems associated with international contracting and desert climate operations.
• Ability to work with hazardous materials.
• Ability to conduct specialty on-the-job training.

Additional Information

Certifications and Clearances

• Must obtain and maintain the following required certifications and qualifications: Applicable Support Equipment licensing, "I" Level and "O" Level Tire and Wheel certification, Hydraulic Contamination certification, Collateral Duty Inspector (CDI) qualification.
• Must be willing to administrate, maintain and manage maintenance programs such as Tool Control, HAZMAT, FOD and MetCal as required by local policies.
• Requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense (DoD) Secret Level security clearance.

Work Requirements and Conditions

• Must be able to adhere to and comply with all Kuwaiti Labor and Immigration requirements.
• Must be willing and able to deploy off-site as required to support Kuwait Air Force operations.
• Must be able to work day shift, night shift or weekend duty and travel as part of a maintenance repair team as required.
• Must be willing and able to work with job-required hazardous materials.

Physical Demands

• Frequently required to use hands to finger, handle or feel; sit, stand and reach with hands and arms; walk, climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and talk or hear.
• Must be able to lift 20 lbs. and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
• Required vision abilities include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

• Environmental conditions range from office environments with little or no physical discomfort to environments where inclement weather may subject individuals to severe changes in temperature, less than adequate lighting, dust and wind.
