Anesthesia Technician

Role Overview

Anesthesia Technician at NMC Healthcare. The role supports anesthesiologists, residents, and nurse anesthetists in performing anesthetic procedures for patients ranging from infancy to geriatrics.

Role Purpose

Perform technical and supportive patient care tasks to assist anesthesia providers in delivering safe and effective anesthesia care to patients before, during, and after surgical or diagnostic procedures. Prepare, operate, and maintain medical equipment while providing clinical assistance under anesthesia team supervision.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care Support

• Assist anesthesia providers using aseptic or sterile technique with non-invasive and invasive patient procedures including peripheral and/or central intravenous and/or arterial line placement.
• Assist anesthesia provider during airway management techniques including mask, endotracheal and/or emergency methods and regional anesthesia techniques.
• Assist anesthesia providers with physiological monitoring of patients, notifying the anesthesia provider(s) of abnormal changes in vital signs and/or physical appearance of the patient.
• Communicate with patients while helping prepare them for anesthesia to explain procedures, allay fears, and elicit patient cooperation.
• Assist anesthetists with starting intravenous infusion.
• Maintain immediate availability to assist in routine and emergency procedures.

Equipment & Supply Management

• Consult Operating Room schedule to determine supply and equipment needs for procedures.
• Prepare anesthetizing locations for indicated procedure to include setting up and calibrating monitoring devices.
• Check, assess, and troubleshoot anesthesia equipment malfunctions, routing non-functional equipment to the proper department for repair.
• Clean anesthesia machines, monitors, and equipment following procedures established by Infection Control.
• Stock anesthesia supplies in all anesthetizing locations including plows carts, fiber optic carts, emergency airway bags, and any other anesthesia supply location.
• Obtain supplies and equipment as requested by anesthesia providers.
• Learn and keep current with the name of equipment, supplies, and pharmacological agents and be familiar with the locations of same.
• Maintain current knowledge of operating procedures and maintenance of new equipment.

Laboratory & Pharmaceutical Support

• Assist with patient laboratory tests and results including, but not limited to, ABGs, ACTs, and other point-of-care tests.
• Obtain blood products and pharmaceuticals, assisting with preparation and delivery.

Leadership & Development

• May act as a resource and role model for other anesthesia technicians, anesthesia providers, learners, and other health care team members by providing technical guidance and instruction as appropriate.
• May provide verbal and written feedback of interviewees and peers as appropriate and as indicated by supervisor.
• May serve as an instructor/facilitator of educational in-services for other anesthesia technicians.
• May act as a role model for orientation and training of anesthesia technicians and other health care team members.
• May assume anesthesia technician charge role in managing daily work schedule of anesthesia technicians and directing care to provide an efficient and safe environment.

Professional Development & Compliance

• Acquire and/or maintain certification by obtaining annual continuing education requirements.
• Participate in conferences or training to update or share knowledge of new techniques in Anesthesia.
• Participate in any PI activities and scheduled continuing nursing education and updating.
• Attend staff meetings as and when required on a regular basis.

Safety & Infection Control

• Maintain awareness of safety hazards and take necessary action to prevent accidents.
• Maintain confidentiality of patient records and activities in the Operating Room.
• Comply with all OSH and infection control policies, standards, and procedures and cooperate with hospital management to comply with those requirements.
• Work in accordance with the documented OSH procedures and instructions and specific responsibilities.
• Be familiar with emergency and evacuation procedures.
• Notify OSH of hazards, incidents, near misses, and issues, and assist with the preparation of risk assessments and incident reports.
• Comply with waste management procedures and policies.
• Attend applicable OSH/Infection Control training programs, mock drills, and awareness programs.
• Use appropriate personal protective equipment and safety systems.

Scheduling & Availability

• Share "on call" rotation to provide assistance for emergency surgeries during other than normal hours, i.e., nights, weekends, and holidays.

General Duties

• Perform routine and delegated duties according to departmental policies.
• Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned by Unit Supervisor/Charge Nurse/or other Anesthetist.

Qualifications & Experience

• Valid DOH License as Anesthesia Technologist/Technician to work in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
• Bachelor's/Diploma in Anesthesia Technology from a recognized university.
• Minimum 3–4 years of experience as an Anesthesia Technologist/Technician in a multispecialty hospital facility.
• Valid home country license and registration as an Anesthesia Technologist/Technician.
• Valid Basic Life Support Provider Certification.
• Valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification.

Skills & Competencies

• Ability to work effectively and efficiently under pressure in a stressful environment, and often without relief.
• Ability to demonstrate knowledge relating to anesthesia procedures in order to effectively anticipate the needs of the anesthesiologist.
• Ability to set priorities and respond appropriately to actual and/or potential life-threatening situations.
• Demonstrate the ability to work in cordial conditions within a group practice in a hospital setting and as a member of a team.
• Demonstrate the ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Excellent command of oral and written English.
• Arabic language skills are advantageous/desirable but not essential.
• Experience in various pain management technique modalities preferred.
