TUG CHIEF OFFICER

Role Overview

Tug Chief Officer at NMDC Group. Responsible for day-to-day operation of tug vessels, assisting the Master in all vessel movements, activities and operations in accordance with NMDC regulations, policies and operating procedures.

Role Purpose

To ensure safe, compliant and efficient operation of tugboat movements and towing activities while maintaining full adherence to fleet regulations, national and local port/harbor law, and the vessel's safety management system.

Key Responsibilities

Vessel Operations & Navigation

• Determine course and towing speed based on specialized knowledge of local winds, weather, tides and currents.
• Steer tugboat to push or pull vessels to destination.
• Berth and unberth vessels while avoiding reefs, outlying shoals and other hazards to shipping.
• Utilize navigation devices including radar, sonic depth finder, compass and sextant.
• Use aids to navigation such as lighthouses and buoys.
• Direct placement of suction hose or siphon to pump water from vessel holds.
• Signal workers to repair leaks.

Safety Management & Compliance

• Ensure familiarity with fleet regulations and documents comprising the safety management system (SMS).
• Operate the vessel in accordance with fleet regulations, national law and local port/harbor by law.
• Ensure crew on the vessel are aware of the contents of applicable risk assessments.
• Safeguard and motivate crew on safety observations.
• Protect the environment and safeguard the safety of the tug.
• Establish onboard procedures to implement requirements of marine standards and safety management system documents.
• Ensure periodical reviews of the safety management system are carried out.
• Report deficiencies to the Marine Superintendent.

Crew Leadership & Training

• Issue appropriate orders in clear, simple and unambiguous manner.
• Ensure crew members newly appointed to the vessel are properly inducted regarding vessel familiarization, operational training and procedures.

Documentation & Record-Keeping

• Complete proper statutory documentation including official log books, departmental log books and oil record books.
• Maintain records as required by regulation.

Qualifications & Experience

• Valid Master Mariner 3000 GT and Below or Chief Mate Class 1 II/2 STCW unlimited.
• Certification recognized by State, national and international authorities (White listed).
