Staff Nurse - ICU (STMC)

Role Overview

Staff Nurse - ICU at SEHA, located in Abu Dhabi.

Role Purpose

Provide safe, patient-centered nursing care in the intensive care unit. Administer medications, monitor patient conditions, maintain accurate documentation, and collaborate with the healthcare team. Supervise and mentor junior staff, support patient safety and quality improvement, and ensure compliance with healthcare standards and policies.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Practice

• Assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care in accordance with organizational policy, procedures and unit scope of service.
• Assume accountability and responsibility for own practice and refrain from carrying out tasks beyond level of competence.
• Utilize evidence-based practice in the provision of care.
• Coordinate individualized care from point of first contact throughout the episode of care, incorporating discharge planning.
• Identify significant changes in patient conditions, initiate appropriate action and report to immediate supervisor or physician.
• Prioritize patient care based on ongoing assessment of patient needs.
• Participate in the referral process and utilize available resources for comprehensive care to patients and families.
• Demonstrate service excellence and act as a patient advocate to support the patient's rights and dignity.
• Facilitate a climate of mutual understanding and appreciation of cross-cultural differences.
• Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to provide patient and family-centered care.
• Administer medications according to organizational policies and procedures.
• Understand medication actions, contraindications, evaluate patient response and identify side effects and initiate appropriate action.
• Practice within the Ministry of Health and HA-AD Narcotic Policies and Procedures.
• Report Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) and medication errors in accordance with organizational policy.
• Respond to all levels of emergencies according to organizational policies and procedures.
• Demonstrate working knowledge of resource consumption and practice within a cost-effective framework.

Communication

• Maintain confidentiality and security of patient, family and organizational information in accordance with confidentiality policy.
• Document care and participate in the use of information technology and relevant electronic medical records.
• Facilitate effective communication between the patient, family and interdisciplinary healthcare team.
• Liaise with other healthcare providers to ensure appropriate and timely interventions and discharge planning.
• Actively participate in meetings, rounds and case conferences in the role of primary nurse.
• Provide comprehensive clinical handover and reports to ensure patient safety.
• Ensure nursing documentation is compliant with organizational policies and procedures.
• Ensure documentation reflects continuous, systematic and accurate nursing assessment of all patient care events.
• Establish and maintain professional boundaries with patients and members of the healthcare team.

Performance Improvement and Risk Management

• Participate in quality improvement activities by assisting with development of standards, implementation and review of policies, procedures and guidelines.
• Evaluate indicators and report outcomes and trends.
• Monitor and assist in evaluating unit operation and services to correct problems, improve systems and ensure safe patient care.
• Participate in interdisciplinary teams and Performance Improvement Projects for evaluation and improvement of processes and clinical practice.
• Actively contribute to the organization's culture of patient safety.
• Ensure provision of a clean and safe working environment that minimizes risks to patients, visitors, staff and self.
• Identify faulty or defective equipment or furniture, remove from service and report to immediate supervisor.
• Comply with International and HAAD patient safety goals.
• Actively promote and comply with the organization's Infection Control policies and procedures.
• Identify, manage and report incidents to immediate supervisor and physician as required.
• Complete appropriate documentation according to organizational policy.

Education

• Assess patient and family education needs, plan for and provide education and evaluate outcome.
• Provide suitable environment that supports patient and family learning.
• Ensure patient and family are provided with comprehensive information and resources to meet their healthcare needs.
• Engage in health promotion activities in the healthcare organization and community.

Professional Responsibilities

• Promote suitable learning environment for staff and act as mentor or preceptor as needed.
• Supervise and teach other staff as needed.
• Complete mandatory and unit-specific competencies and demonstrate ongoing competence.
• Identify own professional learning needs in conjunction with Manager, Charge Nurse or CRN and develop an annual learning plan.
• Demonstrate improvement in clinical practice as a result of application of new theoretical knowledge.
• Initiate or participate in nursing or other disciplines research that contributes to continual improvement in standards of care.
• Develop and maintain own Professional Portfolio per HA-AD policy.
• Obtain accredited and non-accredited Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) Units in compliance with HA-AD and organizational requirements.

Qualifications & Experience

• Minimum 2 years clinical experience post-qualification in appropriate setting (experience requirement waived for graduates of UAE nursing colleges or universities after completion of internship).
