SR DREDGE MASTER

Role Overview

Senior Dredge Master at NMDC Group. The role supervises and guides all activities related to the dredger, teaching and advising the crew on a daily basis to increase their understanding of dredging operations onboard and achieve higher quality, safety, technical reliability, production and operational hours.

Role Purpose

To exercise overall command and control of cutter suction dredge operations, maintenance and crew welfare, ensuring safe execution of dredging works in accordance with company procedures, customer requirements, and applicable environmental and safety regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Operations & Production

• Organize and supervise the execution of dredging cutter suction works according to planning, budgeting and applied methods.
• Ensure optimal utilization and daily production in accordance with the operational capabilities of the CSD.
• Generate production reporting on each operation.
• Keep track of cubic meters pumped through the floating pipeline.
• Provide input on planning on a day-to-day basis in agreement with the SDI/TSI.
• Advise the dredging superintendent in respect of planning of the work process, cutting patterns and shore connections.

Maintenance & Technical Management

• Exercise overall control of CSD's maintenance and operation.
• SDM will keep track and plan maintenance of CSD and will schedule maintenance in alignment with the project team.
• Keep track of the wear and tear of all soil conveying parts (deck lines, impellers, inner/outer pump houses, sheaves, suction mouth, etc.) by means of a register based on the characteristics of the dredge material and the pumped volume.
• Verify if maintenance is done on time on auxiliary vessels and CSD and perform regular checks if all equipment is safe for operations.
• Implement the maintenance plan of CSD and auxiliary vessels in accordance with Technical Department objectives.
• Report defects to vessels or their auxiliary equipment to the Technical Department, the Project Manager and the Head office.

Crew Management & Training

• Exercise discipline and training of crew in order to create and maintain a high productive, efficient and safe working environment.
• Teach and guide crew on board in dredging techniques and planning of deck and engine room related activities.
• Assess the crew and provide honest and detailed evaluations to all Crewing, Operations and Technical departments.

Health, Safety & Environment

• Ensure that assigned works are executed safely and without risks for health, quality and environment, according to both customer requirements and company requirements.
• Identify hazards.
• Make recommendations to HSE Department.
• Report all accidents, incidents and near misses to the project manager, HSE manager and designated person.
• Report accidents or particular events.
• Execute the ISM-management on board and arrange that all required drills and inspections are performed at the required intervals.
• Execution of work in accordance with local environmental prescriptions and regulations.

Improvement & Development

• Inform opportunities to improve to Operations department and Technical Department.
• Propose methods to increase production with the crew on board.
• Propose methods to the Technical department to increase technical reliability.
• Propose methods to HSE department in order to increase safety on board.
• Provides input regarding possible upgrades, small and major upgrades and small and major modifications to improve reliability and production of the CSD.
• Provide lessons learned register and implementation of action points.
• Obtain information from HSE Department.
• Investigate incidents.

Reporting & Communication

• Daily production reporting to and consultation with the Project Manager and the Project Team on operational activities, more in particular on the progress of works for which responsible.
• Ensure all tasks and control related to quality as specified in relevant project quality plan.

Command Authority

• Schedule personnel and auxiliary vessels on projects in order to perform works as planned.
• Take all necessary decisions in order to carry out work safely, with care for the environment and with quality according to requirements.
• SDM has ultimate responsibility of the safety and daily operation of CSD and crew, as prescribed by Company procedures and guidelines.
• SDM has full power in coordination with DSI/TSI/WM/PM to take whatever action deemed best in order to safeguard the interest of vessel and its crew.
• Defend the Company's policy and procedures.
• Final word in regards to all activities on board of CSD, which are not limited to operations, planning, maintenance, deck department, engine department and others.
• Authority of the SDM exercises in accordance with international and national laws in force in the situation and work area where the dredger lies.
• Generalist view of a job that you have been assigned for—at times you will be asked to do above and beyond the scope of this role due to operational/technical requirements.

Qualifications & Experience

• Diploma or Degree or equivalent professional qualification and experience.
• 10+ years of experience, preferably worldwide.
• Minimum 7.5 years on CSD with minimum 1500 KW Cutter power.
• Proven experience on high performance driven CSD in leading role.

Skills & Competencies

• STCW Code; Basic and Advance with Manila Amendments.
• Hold valid statutory license issued by flag authority for specific on-board job.
• Familiar with SMS (Safety Management System).
• Risk Assessment / PTW.
• Full understanding of the parts and working principle of CSD and their limitations.
• Proven understanding of dredging methodology in the use of pumps (UWP, IBP), ladder weight, side winch (including brake), vacuum, cutter diesel-direct and diesel-electric CSD.
