Role Overview
Speech-Language Therapist/Pathologist at SEHA (UAE National position).
Role Purpose
Provide quality professional services in the evaluation and treatment of patients with speech, language, cognitive, fluency, voice, swallowing and feeding disorders and associated communication problems.
Key Responsibilities
Assessment & Diagnosis
- Take in-depth case histories to include medical, social, psychological, educational and developmental information.
- Use investigative skills and broad knowledge of standardised assessments together with sound analytical clinical reasoning skills to form a baseline measure or differential diagnosis.
- Provide assessment, diagnosis, and therapy for patients with speech, language, communication, and developmental disorders.
Treatment Planning & Delivery
- Independently manage with supervision a caseload of patients with developmental speech and language delay and disorder, social communication disorder including dysfluency and motor speech disorders (dyspraxia).
- Develop and implement specialised speech and language treatment plans for individuals and groups targeting a wide range of difficulties including developing attention and listening skills, auditory processing skills, play and interaction, understanding and expression of language, and speech production and sound system development (pronunciation).
- Deliver therapy intervention ensuring that speech, language and communication programmes are an integral part of the patient's learning and daily routines.
- Develop individualised treatment plans.
Patient & Family Support
- Establish and maintain a productive therapeutic relationship with patients, carers and families.
- Agree decision-making which is relevant to the patient's management, taking into account challenging communication impairment, challenging behaviour, psychological and emotional state and differing cultural attitudes and expectations.
- Advise others regarding the management and care of patients with communication needs and oro-motor difficulties, including setting and reviewing specific targets in collaboration with those in daily contact with the patient and responsible for developing the patient's skills.
- Demonstrate activities and provide resources to realise the targets.
- Support patients and families.
- Involve families, carers and educators.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration
- Work as a member of the speech-language pathology team providing an efficient and effective service, liaising with internal and external agencies.
- Provide timely and targeted individualised management, treatment and advice for patients.
- Provide appropriate recommendations and training to professionals from other agencies and other disciplines.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
Infection Control & Safety
- Apply standard precautions for infection control, using a series of interventions that minimise or prevent cross infection.
- Ensure effective hand washing and cleansing when appropriate, particularly on entering and leaving clinical areas and between each patient.
- Maintain high control over infection, safety and health regulations and ensure that all concerned parties follow the same.
- Promote effective communication and language development while ensuring high standards of patient care, safety, infection control, and confidentiality.
Equipment & Facilities Management
- Continuously monitor all use of equipment, reporting of any faulty behavior.
- Contact maintenance and suppliers for any required repairs and updates.
Confidentiality & Records
- Maintain the strictest confidence in relation to patient information whether formally or informally recorded.
Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum 2 years of experience in the field of Speech and Hearing Sciences or Speech-Language Pathology.
- Proven communication skills in Arabic are desirable.
