Specialist Physician-Emergency

Role Overview

Specialist Physician-Emergency at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC). The role is based in the Emergency Department, supporting the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based, patient-centered care.

Role Purpose

Deliver clinical excellence in emergency medicine under the supervision of the Consultant Physician, while contributing to the supervision and training of junior medical staff and supporting divisional initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care & Patient Management

• Diagnose and treat patients according to established standards of best practice for emergency medicine, under supervision of the Consultant Physician.
• Lead ward rounds and reassess both inpatients and outpatients on a regular basis in line with established best practice.
• Accept clinically appropriate referrals from the Emergency Department, primary care, other departments, specialty clinics, walk-in patients, and patients referred from other hospitals.
• Ensure preparation of patients for all procedures including obtaining informed consent.
• Regularly review results of all investigations and modify treatment as required.
• Communicate clinical information to patients and the patient's family and friends, with patient consent, in a timely manner.
• Practice appropriate utilization of the organization's resources.

Supervision & Training

• Assist the Consultant Physician in supervising the activities of junior medical staff and jointly assume responsibility for the care they provide.
• Promote and assist in the instruction, guidance and supervision of junior medical staff.
• Comply with any regulations related to mentoring, training and development of UAE nationals staff.

Interdisciplinary & Stakeholder Collaboration

• Liaise with other medical specialties and support services for additional input as required.
• Actively participate in multi-disciplinary meetings to help plan effective, safe and holistic care for individual patients.
• Maintain a good working relationship with members of staff and promote collaboration and a team-based approach to patient care.
• Build key partnerships within the organization for pursuing client-centered, comprehensive, integrated systems of care.
• Maintain positive and effective working relationships within the department/division and with other departments/sections within the facility.

Documentation & Compliance

• Accurately document all relevant clinical information in a clear and timely fashion in accordance with established procedures.
• Comply with all hospital policies regarding admissions, consultations, daily patient care, surgical procedures, discharge protocols, outpatient and follow-up practices.
• Support and adhere to all hospital departmental and divisional initiatives, policies and procedures.
• Comply consistently with facility policies, procedures and practices and ensure alignment with SSMC facilities policies.
• Complete and maintain regulatory requirements including licensure and certification and other mandatory training within established time frames.
• Maintain confidentiality with regard to any information exchanged or received in the current capacity of the role in accordance with facility policy.
• Adhere to requirements of Occupational Health and Safety guidelines and infection control guidelines.
• Understand and adhere to emergency preparedness plans and policies.
• Dress appropriately to meet the expectations of the specific work area and in alignment with Occupational Health and Safety policies.

On-Call & Coverage

• Participate in and support the Consultant Physician in ensuring the provision of out-of-hours on-call coverage on a rotational basis including evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays as required.
• Assist Consultant staff in ensuring that adequate medical coverage is provided within the Division at all times.

Quality Improvement & Safety

• Support the reporting, investigation, and response to untoward incidents.
• Help support quality improvement initiatives within the Division.
• Support a culture of regular audit and encourage the use of audit results for improving clinical practice.
• Promote and participate in clinical research and publication.
• Keep abreast of current, relevant literature and the latest trends and technologies in the industry.
• Recognize the necessity of continuously developing skills and acquiring additional knowledge appropriate to the position.

Organizational Participation

• Support and participate in the organization's performance management system, including peer review and the productivity and utilization review processes.
• Attend Divisional meetings as invited.
• Assume other administrative or clinical duties as requested by the Consultant Staff.
• Perform any other duties as may be assigned relevant to the basic responsibilities of the role.

Qualifications & Experience

Required Education

• Board certification in Emergency Medicine (Tier 1, Tier 2, or Tier 3 qualification).
• Current national license or equivalent.

Required Experience

• Tier 1: No additional experience required post board certification.
• Tier 2: Not less than 2 years of clinical experience post qualification in an internationally accredited institute.
• Tier 3: Not less than 3 years clinical experience as Specialist post qualification in an internationally accredited institute.

UAE Nationals

• No additional experience required post board certification.
• UAE nationals enrolled in HAAD accredited residency programs: no experience required post board certification.
