Role Overview

Specialist - Orthopaedics Surgery at NMC Healthcare. This role provides orthopaedic surgical care and clinical leadership within the Medical Centre.

Role Purpose

Deliver comprehensive orthopaedic care to patients of all age groups, diagnose and treat joint replacement, sports-related injuries, spine injuries, and post-surgery rehabilitation while maintaining the highest professional standards and contributing to organizational quality and safety initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care

• Provide care to all age groups with orthopaedic conditions.
• Diagnose joint replacement, sports-related injuries, spine injuries, and post-surgery and rehabilitation programs.
• Manage conditions that worsen over time, such as arthritis or osteoporosis.
• Prevent pain and discomfort from overuse injuries.
• Give the best possible care to patients in the Medical Centre, ensuring high professional standards consistent with available resources.
• Ensure high professional standard of care is provided to patients under their care within assigned privileges.
• Take Most Responsible Physician (MRP) responsibilities for patients under direct care.
• Ensure accurate, legible, and timely completion of all medical records according to policy.

Patient Communication & Advocacy

• Keep patients and families fully informed about their condition in an ethical and humane manner.
• Protect patients from anxiety related to partially heard or poorly understood medical conversation.
• Avoid criticism of colleagues in front of patients or relatives unless in strict medical legal consultation and prepared to put criticism in writing.

Professional Standards & Compliance

• Abide by the rules of the Department and Section.
• Observe ethical standards compatible with contemporary medical practice.
• Recognize the authority of the Head of Department, Medical Director, Medical Executive Committee, and Medical Centre Director.
• Notify the Head of Department, Medical Director, or Medical Centre Director of any actions or claims that may have an effect on licensure to practice medicine.
• Maintain confidentiality in all matters according to Department of Health (DOH) policy.
• Exercise good judgment and maintain confidentiality in maintaining critical and sensitive information, records, and reports.
• Comply with the established NMCRMC Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) procedures.

Education & Professional Development

• Provide and maintain medical and health professional education and continuing interdisciplinary health professional education.
• Maintain involvement in continuing medical and interdisciplinary professional education to meet minimum DOH requirements.
• Promote evidence-based decision-making.
• Take a leading role in the teaching of all junior medical staff.
• Contribute to the teaching of nurses, other personnel, patients, their carers, and the public as needed.
• Demonstrate team leadership to the group of staff working directly with them.
• Work in a collegiate manner with all Medical Centre staff.
• Contribute to the teaching of all staff involved in the care of their patients to ensure they can perform as expected by clinical privileges.
• Attempt to improve service to patients through audit, research, attendance at educational events, and use of the library and other educational facilities.

Governance & Policies

• Contribute to the development of and comply with the By-Laws, Rules, Regulations, and policies of the Medical Centre.
• Work within the various rules, regulations, and guidelines of the section and department.
• Promote evidence-based decision-making.
• Contribute to the production of Clinical Guidelines, Critical Care Pathways, and Managed Care Processes as needed for patient care or upon request from Head of Section, Department, or line managers.
• Transfer MRP position only with agreement of another physician.

Consultations & Collaboration

• Provide professional advice and technical services to another Specialist, Consultant, or their patient as requested and for which privileged.
• Give and request consultations according to Medical Centre policies.
• Take professional responsibility for care given to patients by themselves and any junior medical staff working under their direction.

Governance & Committee Participation

• Attend all meetings of the departments to which appointed (unless excused).
• Serve on sub-committees of the Medical Executive Committee as required.
• Take part in mortality and morbidity meetings in an open and collegiate manner to ensure fairness and truth in discussions.

On-Call & Emergency Duties

• Take on-call duty according to the department rota and the needs of patients.
• When on out-of-normal-working-hours on-call duty, take on temporary MRP responsibility for all patients left under their care.
• Ensure handover process is carried out appropriate to patient requirements.
• Maintain same clinical privileges during temporary MRP role; if normal MRP or one with same clinical privileges is unavailable to deal with a problem outside the on-call physician's agreed capability, emergency privileges apply.

Performance Management

• Discuss with line manager all examples of serious or repeated minor failures to perform by other medical staff to ensure necessary intervention at an early stage.
• Perform such other duties as may be prescribed from time to time by the Medical Centre Director, Medical Executive Committee, Medical Director, or Head of Department.

Occupational Safety & Health

• Attend Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) programs as a mandatory requirement.
• Comply with all OSH policies and procedures and legal requirements regarding Occupational Safety and Health Management System.
• Conduct tasks in a healthy and safe manner at all times.
• Report any untoward events that will impact occupational safety and health of patients, staff, contractors, facilities, or operations.
• Actively participate with line management towards implementation of OHSMS requirements.
• Report to the respective manager any potentially hazardous acts, unsafe conditions, or conditions which may cause Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) impacts.
• Report all EHS hazards, near misses, and incidents to the respective line manager.

Infection Control

• Ensure personal accountability and compliance with infection prevention and control policies.
• Identify infectious conditions that require specific controls to protect themselves and their patients.
• Notify infection prevention of infectious conditions identified.

Administrative & Other Duties

• Actively participate in the Medical Centre's ongoing Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Programs and other In-Service Training Programs.
• Act as a translator if needed.
• Has sole responsibility for issuing DOH Sick Leave from the DOH website.
• Perform other duties and tasks assigned by the Head of Department.

Qualifications & Experience

• MBBS or MBChB or equivalent qualification from an accredited institution.
• Completion of specialty qualification as per the Recognized Specialty Certificate table.
