Role Overview

Specialist General Surgery position at NMC Healthcare in the United Arab Emirates.

Role Purpose

Deliver comprehensive surgical diagnosis, treatment, and care to inpatients, day cases, and outpatients requiring general surgery, with demonstrated special interests in either upper or lower general surgical practice.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care and Treatment

• Prescribe or administer medication, therapy, and specialized medical care to treat or prevent illness, disease, or injury.
• Interact with patients to gather additional history and information about their medical condition.
• Explain procedures and discuss test results or prescribed treatments with patients.
• Provide specific treatments and perform operations to treat patient medical conditions.
• Perform surgical procedures and operations as appropriate.
• Apply medical knowledge and skills to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of illnesses for patients.
• Undertake pre and post-operative assessment of patients.
• Carry out necessary duties to ensure the best and most cost-effective treatment of patients.

Quality and Standards

• Contribute to the development of Clinical Quality Standards.
• Be responsible to the Medical Director for the quality of care delivered and the effective and efficient use of resources under control.
• Ensure ongoing medical competence by participating in annual relicensing and recertification schemes in the United Arab Emirates.
• Maintain and develop professional expertise through self-directed learning and continuous professional development.

Administration and Reporting

• Undertake all necessary administrative duties associated with patient care, including clinical coding, discharge summaries, letters, and reports.
• Participate in the annual appraisal system with the Medical Director, which will include feedback from the Hospital Administrator and other colleagues and patients.

Strategic and Service Development

• Contribute to the planning and development of surgical services.
• Promote patient care by liaising with all departments.

Professional Engagement

• Participate in local and national specialty clinical meetings.
• Participate in the in-service education programme and comply with mandatory training requirements, inclusive of CPR, Health & Safety Training, and Fire Safety.

Occupational Safety and Health

• Comply with reasonable Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) instructions, policies, and safe working procedures.
• Use appropriate personal protective equipment and safety systems.
• Be familiar with emergency and evacuation procedures.
• Not willfully or recklessly endanger anyone's health and safety.
• Assist with the preparation of risk assessments.
• Report OSH hazards, incidents, near misses, and issues.
• Reduce, reuse, and recycle waste as much as possible.
• Attend all OSH trainings, awareness programs, and mock drills.
• Participate in Occupational Safety and Health Management Systems (OSHMS) audits and inspections, ensuring standards are maintained.

Infection Prevention and Control

• Read and implement the NMC Prevention and Control of Infection (PCI) Policy and Strategy in an effort to maintain the highest possible standards of cleanliness at all times, thus reducing the risk of infection in patients, staff, and visitors.
• Maintain the strictest hand hygiene, including the 5 moments of hand hygiene, bare below the elbows practices, and environmental care at all times.

Qualifications & Experience

• Basic medical degree and completion of a specialty qualification or education programme (fellowship or diploma) recognised by the relevant UAE healthcare authority.
• At least 3 to 5 years post-qualification experience at Specialist level, independent of country.
• At least 1 year Specialist level experience from a Tier 1 country as specified by the UAE healthcare regulator.
• Certification and registration in a specialty recognised by the relevant UAE healthcare authority.
• Eligibility for relevant healthcare authority registration, such as Membership from Royal College, Arab Board Certification, MS, DM, MPhil, or an equivalent recognised by the relevant healthcare authority in the UAE.

Skills & Competencies

• Active and valid life support certification (such as BLS, ACLS, PALS, ATLS, or NRP).
• Demonstrated special interests in either upper or lower general surgical practice.
