Sonographer

Role Overview

Sonographer at NMC Healthcare. The role operates within Radiology facilities, Emergency Room, Operating Room, Out-Patient Department, and special clinics on a 24-hour on-call rotation basis.

Role Purpose

Perform a full range of routine and general radiologic procedures for examination of all parts of the human body, exercising proper safety and radiation protection at all times. The role requires strict adherence to radiation safety regulations due to radiation hazards inherent in the work environment.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Procedures & Patient Care

• Review radiologic requests to determine the region(s) to be examined and radiographic projections to be taken, based on patient history, departmental guidelines, physician recommendations, patient condition, and independent judgment.
• Transport, prepare and position patients using care, tact, courtesy and patience.
• Adjust, manipulate and control a variety of highly technological and costly radiographic equipment and accessories to obtain optimum quality radiographs as prescribed in the departmental procedure manual.
• Ensure proper patient safety by utilizing special equipment or accessories for radiographic procedures.
• Prepare and assist in administering contrast media and performing special radiographic procedures or operating specialized radiographic equipment under general supervision of the Radiologist.
• Recognize changes in patient condition that require emergency action and initiate appropriate response.

Quality Assurance & Maintenance

• Review processed radiographs for optimal quality and assist in quality control by maintaining film processing units.
• Maintain clean and antiseptic conditions of radiology equipment and accessories in the working and clinical environment.
• Assist in maintaining appropriate inventory of supplies and accessories for the performance of radiologic procedures.

Safety, Compliance & Governance

• Demonstrate functional knowledge of sterile and isolation technique in order to prevent contamination.
• Demonstrate functional knowledge pertaining to potential radiation hazards and appropriate radiation safety regulations.
• Strictly observe the organization's medical regulations and policies, especially those related to infection control, patient safety, patient assessment and patient care.
• Comply with all Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) and infection control policies, standards and procedures and cooperate with hospital management to comply with those requirements.
• Work in accordance with documented OSH procedures and instructions and specific responsibilities.
• Be familiar with emergency and evacuation procedures.
• Notify OSH hazards, incidents, near misses and issues and assist with the preparation of risk assessments and incident reports.
• Comply with waste management procedures and policies.
• Use appropriate personal protective equipment and safety systems.

Stakeholder Management & Development

• Arrange for appropriate patient flow to and from assigned clinical area.
• Assist with the instruction of Radiologic Technology staff in aspects of radiologic technology that pertain to the clinical area.
• Attend in-service education and staff development meetings.
• Attend applicable OSH/Infection control training programs, mock drills and awareness programs.
• Perform other miscellaneous related duties as requested by the Radiologist.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor degree or Diploma in Diagnostic Ultrasound or Sonography.
• Minimum of two (2) years' experience post qualification in related field.
• Currently licensed in country of origin and with a DOH/DHA/MOH License to practice in UAE.

Skills & Competencies

• Fluent in spoken and written English; Arabic language is desirable, but not essential.
• Functional knowledge of sterile and isolation technique.
• Functional knowledge of radiation hazards and radiation safety regulations.
• Ability to recognize and respond to patient emergency situations.
