Sleep Lab Technologist II

Role Overview

Sleep Lab Technologist II at King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz University Hospital. The position provides comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for sleep disorders.

Role Purpose

Provide comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic interventions of sleep disorders through patient assessment, equipment preparation, polysomnographic testing, data scoring, and patient education.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Information & Assessment

• Collect, analyze and integrate patient information to identify and meet patient-specific needs and determine final testing parameters and procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or Medical Director and laboratory protocols.
• Complete and verify documentation.
• Explain pre-testing, testing, and post-testing procedures to the patient.
• Gather essential and accurate information about the patient.

Testing Preparation & Equipment Management

• Prepare and calibrate equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning and make adjustments if necessary.
• Apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.
• Perform appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals and make adjustments if necessary.
• Perform routine positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting.
• Perform routine equipment care and maintenance and inventory evaluation.

Polysomnographic Procedures

• Follow procedural protocols such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnia studies, PAP and oxygen titration to ensure collection of appropriate data.
• Follow "lights out" procedures to establish and document baseline values such as body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory and heart rates.
• Perform polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free and make adjustments if necessary.
• Document routine observations including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.
• Implement appropriate interventions including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration.
• Follow "lights on" procedures to verify integrity of collected data and complete the data collection process including repeating physiological and instrument calibrations and instructing the patient on completing questionnaires.
• Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age-specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.

Polysomnographic Recording & Scoring

• Score sleep and wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines.
• Score clinical events such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, and arousals with hospital-specific policies and protocols.
• Generate accurate reports by tabulating sleep, wake, and clinical event data.

Sleep Lab Procedures

• Perform the following sleep lab-related procedures in accordance with departmental guidelines: Multiple Sleep Latency Testing, Carbon Dioxide Measurement During Sleep, Esophageal pH, Polysomnography, Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), Actigraphy, Portable Monitoring, Polysomnography with Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (NCPAP) and/or Biphasic Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP), Supplemental Oxygen During Sleep, Pulse Oximeter Trend Scoring, NCPAP/BiPAP Subject Training, Subject Education and Evaluation of Interviews.

Patient & Family Education

• Provide patient and family education related to health learning needs.
• Respect patients and their families to promote a patient-centered care culture.

Professional & Safety Compliance

• Comply with applicable policies, procedures, and guidelines regarding safety and infection control issues.
• Maintain current life support certification.
• Interpret laboratory data, imaging studies and other tests.
• Participate in implementing and adjusting patient management plans.

Quality & Development

• Participate in and support quality improvement and patient safety activities as an individual or as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Act as a preceptor to new employees and/or students and interns.
• Perform additional job-related duties as assigned.

Scheduling & Availability

• Work according to assigned work schedule including shifts and on-call duties.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Care or Nursing with RRT-SDS and/or RPSGT credential.
• 2–4 years of experience in sleep lab medicine.
• Saudi Commission for Health Specialties License.
• BLS certification.
