Senior Sustainability Engineer

Role Overview

Role Purpose

To ensure construction projects meet sustainability certification standards and client requirements by reviewing technical documentation, coordinating with contractors, conducting audits, and driving performance across programs such as LEED, Estidama, and other green rating systems. The role combines deep technical expertise with stakeholder collaboration and leadership in promoting sustainable practices.

Key Responsibilities

Certification & Compliance

• Effectively communicate the sustainability certification program and client's sustainability requirements and progress to project teams.
• Liaise with and review green rating system submission with authorities and prepare all required documentation.
• Schedule and conduct timely audits mandated by regulatory bodies and prepare audit reports for authority's review and approval.
• Ensure the contractor performs sustainability inspections, sampling, and testing of materials in accordance with specified standards, guidelines and requirements.

Technical Review & Documentation

• Review necessary design drawings, materials requirements, specifications, and contractual sustainability documents of the project.
• Review and comment on subcontractor pre-qualifications and specialist credentials.
• Review technical material submittals, shop drawings, calculations and reports submitted by the contractor ensuring compliance to sustainability requirements.
• Review Sustainability plans, procedures, reporting and monitoring trackers, energy simulations and relevant reports submitted by contractor to confirm contractor's understanding of sustainability specifications and KPIs.
• Prepare necessary documentation required to maintain sustainability KPIs.
• Review and comment on alternate sustainability proposals submitted by contractors.
• Inspect on-site and off-site materials to be used in the project, organize and witness field and laboratory tests conducted by third parties on construction materials to ascertain compliance with specification.

Contractor Coordination & Support

• Coordinate with and support contractors including MEP and Civil engineers.
• Liaise with the contractor's Sustainability Manager/Engineer for day-to-day sustainability issues.
• Conduct and coordinate dedicated site sustainability meetings in conjunction with relevant team members and prepare minutes of meeting.

Audits, Inspections & Monitoring

• Conduct regular site visits and sustainability inspections and audits on contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers.
• Provide oversight to the contractor's Construction Environmental Management Plan and undertake site audits, reporting non-compliance incidents.
• Raise non-conformance notices and reports; site inspection notices identify deficiencies in conjunction with the resident engineer.
• Review the corrective and preventative actions proposed by the contractor, respond, follow up and close out procedure.

Reporting & Performance Management

• Review contractor's monthly sustainability progress reports.
• Report sustainability and environmental performance to clients.
• Prepare monthly reports in coordination with all disciplines.
• Develop technical and non-technical reports as per scopes of assigned projects and ensure high quality of deliverables.

Quality Assurance

• Adhere to QA/QC system implemented on site and ensure compliance with quality manual.

Business Development & Knowledge Sharing

• Support the company in potential business growth by promoting AtkinsRéalis services and networking with new potential clients and contacts.
• Coach junior staff and support sustainability training and awareness across all disciplines.
• Conduct product and technology research related to sustainability.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor's degree (B.Eng or B.Tech) in a relevant field.
• 20+ years' experience in sustainability, construction, or related discipline.
• ESTIDAMA PQP (PBRS and PCRS) and LEED AP are mandatory requirements.
• WELL AP (either obtained or in process) is highly desirable.
• Proven experience delivering construction stage of projects within Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
• Full and in-depth knowledge of LEED, Estidama, and Al Sa'fat certification processes and required documentation.
• Proven responsibility for obtaining Estidama and LEED certification at multiple levels on multiple projects.
• Specific knowledge of other green building certification programs such as MOSTADAM, GSAS, and CEEQUAL.
• Awareness of WELL Certification in terms of requirements, processes and submission is a distinct advantage.
