Senior Project Engineer

Role Overview

Senior Project Engineer at Cummins Arabia. This product-focused position applies specialized knowledge of engineering principles and design practices to create optimized design concepts and mechanical design specifications.

Role Purpose

To apply engineering expertise in the design, analysis, and optimization of mechanical and electrical systems for power generation and low-voltage applications, while leading cross-functional teams to develop robust solutions that meet customer and corporate requirements across all lifecycle stages.

Key Responsibilities

Design Leadership & Decision Making

• Lead design decision making in component and subsystem design concept selection, concept optimization, and design specifications.
• Obtain input and lead negotiation with cross-functional and cross-discipline technical experts and senior-level designers to communicate component and subsystem design intent.
• Communicate the capability of design concepts to meet cross-functional requirements through thorough Design Review packages to the Product Preceding Technology (PPT), Value Package Introduction (VPI), or Value Package Change Request (VPCR) team.
• Assess alternative and competitive design concepts to support holistic evaluation.

Design Execution & Technical Tools

• Apply and lead the execution of Critical Design Decisions, System Design and Validation Consideration Checklist, and Design Review processes.
• Execute and optimize use of tools including iDFMEA, DVA, GD&T, CREO, and ANSYS Workbench to enable high-quality subsystem-level design decision making and design refinement.
• Create Computer Aided Design models in accordance with Cummins standards to represent architectural or product-level system design concepts.
• Enable completion of various system-level computer analyses such as Dimensional Variation Analysis and Finite Element Analysis.

Project & Program Management

• Provide independent leadership of smaller business impact projects or ownership of complex components, products, systems, or services with greater elements of ambiguity.
• Deliver independent execution of established and emerging work processes and systems while developing technology or product knowledge.
• Own full accountability to the project team for assigned initiatives.
• Consider application, cost, weight, performance, reliability, durability, manufacturing, assembly, and serviceability in design optimization.

Process Development & Knowledge Transfer

• Lead the development and improvement of work processes and systems across a functional discipline area within a business unit site.
• Coordinate and direct work amongst technicians and temporary student employees.
• Assist in the transfer of knowledge to lesser-experienced engineers through indirect scope of influence or direct management of a small, local group of engineers.
• Operate as a recognized specialist in a discipline or product area within the immediate team.

Technical Guidance & Stakeholder Management

• Provide support and guidance to influence technical direction within a project team.
• Work effectively across cross-functional disciplines to develop corporate and customer requirements.
• Develop and deliver proficiency in competency areas critical to success in the role.
• Resolve product issues through collaborative cross-functional engagement.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent.
• 8 to 10 years of experience in Projects and Commissioning.
• Experience in Low Voltage Systems, Powergen, and Power plants.
• Demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making.
• Project Management Certificate.
• Team Management experience preferred.

• Mechanical Design of Mechanical Systems: In-depth understanding of mechanical systems with working knowledge that guides creation of innovative and sound design concepts to meet Cummins and customer expectations.
• Mechanical Design Modeling and Analysis: Create and analyze CAD models representing architectural and product-level system design concepts.
• System Requirements Engineering: Use appropriate methods and tools to translate stakeholder needs into verifiable requirements; establish acceptance criteria; track requirement status throughout system lifecycle; assess impact of changes on project scope, schedule, and resources; maintain linkages to related artifacts.
• Product Platform Planning and Architecting: Create and develop holistic product platforms including key architectural feature and function variants; generate alternative architectures traceable to requirements; perform trade-off analysis with life-cycle stakeholders; communicate and maintain traceable information and plans executed by product development teams.
