Role Purpose
The Senior Materials & Coatings Engineer improves the Materials & Coatings discipline within McDermott by using best practices and discipline-specific knowledge. They act as a resource for less experienced colleagues, solve complex problems, and ensure the team and related teams work within appropriate guidelines and policies while impacting customer, operational, project, and service activities.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Analysis
- Perform conceptual, FEED, studies, and detailed analyses and design in accordance with design basis, project specifications, design codes, and standards.
- Apply knowledge and skills to a wide range of standard and nonstandard situations.
- Prepare clear and accurate detailed material design and analyses, including design reports and procedures.
- Develop and prepare metallurgical technical specifications for projects.
Material Selection & Documentation
- Develop and review material selection deliverables such as specifications, material selection reports, and diagrams.
- Prepare material selection reports and diagrams for refinery units, petrochemical units, offshore installations, and similar facilities.
- Guide less experienced engineers on Materials & Coatings procedures, standards, worksheets, design calculations, software, requisitions, technical bid evaluations, and technical queries.
Risk & Inspection
- Coordinate and contribute to risk-based inspection (RBI) studies.
- Contribute to the development of risk-based inspection (RBI) studies.
Vendor & Subcontractor Management
- Perform unsupervised vendor document review.
- Review vendor and subcontractor submittals, checking for compliance with project specifications and providing comments as necessary.
- Attend vendor meetings as required.
Project Coordination & Communication
- Be fully familiar with the project scope of work, specifications, schedule, and all inter-discipline requirements; identify concerns as early as practicable and take appropriate initiatives to address issues.
- Interface with all disciplines to develop clash-free designs.
- Interface with other departments to obtain input for discipline designs and drawings.
- Maintain close coordination with other engineering disciplines, Planning, and Project Management Teams as required.
- Document substantive communications that result in significant decisions or assignment of actions and forward copies to Discipline Lead Engineer and Discipline Manager.
- Communicate and explain complex issues to establish understanding.
Scope & Change Management
- Identify changes to scope and promptly raise change notifications, including providing necessary supporting documentation and estimates.
- Provide similar support for Variation Orders.
- Raise technical queries to obtain missing information, clarify work scope, and maintain preferred McDermott procedures, specifications, standards, practices, and operational requirements.
Bid & Proposal Support
- Assist in proposals on metallurgy-related items.
- Contribute to bid clarification meetings, bid reviews, and Pre Inspection Meetings as required.
- Assist in the preparation of estimates for bid proposals, including technical query reviews, execution statements, and man-hour estimates.
Supervision & Leadership
- Supervise and review the work of metallurgy associate engineers.
- Act as a resource for colleagues with less experience.
Deliverables & Quality
- Participate in finalizing deliverables lists and deliverables, ensuring compliance with specifications and functional integrity.
- Assist in providing necessary design inputs to other disciplines to enable them to proceed with their deliverables.
Planning & Administration
- Manage own time to meet agreed deadlines and budgets and develop plans for short-term work activities in own area.
- Be aware of costs related to own work and of the discipline.
- Attend project review meetings and engineering meetings as required.
- Work unsupervised on common tasks and more complex tasks.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree in Engineering.
- 8–15 years of experience in oil and gas with a major contractor or consultant, predominantly performing detail design.
- Preferably Registered Engineer in Training (EIT) or member of professional engineering society as applicable.
- Accredited engineering degree as may be required by specific region.
Skills & Competencies

Additional Information
Reports to: Project Lead Engineer or Program Execution Manager (functional: Supervising Department Manager).
Liaises with: All Engineering disciplines, Fabrication Group, Safety Department, Document Control, Procurement Group, Subcontractors, Vendors, and Customers.
Supervises: Engineers.
