Role Overview
Safety Engineer at Mapei, based at a facility location requiring site-based supervision and operations management.
Role Purpose
Establish and implement comprehensive safety, health, fire, and security protocols aligned with company strategy. Oversee hazard management, incident investigation, regulatory compliance, and emergency preparedness to maintain a safe working environment and protect company assets.
Key Responsibilities
Strategy & Policy Development
- Participate in the development and implementation of department policies, processes and procedures to ensure all relevant procedural and legislative requirements are fulfilled.
- Implement the Safety and Health department strategy to ensure alignment with company strategy.
- Contribute to company policies and develop site policies covering all areas to ensure all relevant procedural and legislative requirements are fulfilled.
Compliance & Standards
- Ensure implementation of company policies, procedures, work ethics, and applicable standards including ISO 9000 and OHSAS 18000 across all Safety, Environment, Fire and Security functions.
- Comply with all relevant safety, quality, health and environmental procedures to ensure a healthy and safe work environment.
Supervision & Operations
- Supervise the activities and work of subordinates to ensure that all work within a specific area is carried out in an efficient manner and in compliance with set policies, processes and procedures.
- Manage the preparation and supervision of plant and building security patrols to maintain security visibility.
- Organise the activities of the entrance gate and plant area to ensure proper control of personnel and vehicle movements.
Hazard & Risk Management
- Oversee all activities related to Hazardous Materials Identification and Management, Safety and Loss Inspection, Accident Analysis and testing to ensure strict adherence to company Safety, Security and Health standards.
- Manage the maintenance and distribution of agreed safety processes and procedures to ensure all employees are made aware of safety campaigns.
- Advise the company on the use, care and control of safety equipment and personal protective equipment to minimise costs and maximise safe working.
Equipment & Infrastructure
- Oversee the adoption of recommendations regarding safety technology and equipment.
- Maintain and update consolidated statistical data of all safety and fire related equipment and systems to ensure that all desired strategy is attained.
- Ensure that all safety and firefighting equipment is regularly inspected and maintained.
- Ensure that the volunteer fire brigade is properly manned and trained.
- Ensure that regular and effective inspection tours are made by Safety personnel daily and that corrective action is taken where necessary to fire and safety installations or procedures.
Investigation & Incident Response
- Carry out investigations into all accidents, significant incidents and fires and determine the causes; recommend action to prevent recurrence.
- Carry out investigation of all significant damage to company property, determine the cause and recommend action to prevent recurrence.
- Ensure effective investigation and reporting of thefts, break-ins, suspected frauds, damage, arson or sabotage which affect the company.
Security & Emergency Management
- Liaise with local security forces and maintain a level of contact which ensures that the company receives the highest level of assistance and information.
- Develop company emergency and disaster control plans to ensure that a program is available during such emergencies.
People Development
- Conduct coaching and mentoring to subordinates to ensure continuous learning process and skills development.
Reporting
- Report on the performance of the EHS management system to top management.
- Generate timely and accurate statements and reports of the Safety and Health Department to meet company and department requirements, policies and standards.
