Role Overview
Registered Nurse - Pediatric at NMC Healthcare in Sharjah, responsible for delivering comprehensive nursing care to pediatric patients within scope of practice, prioritizing patient health, wellbeing, and safety.
Role Purpose
To assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care needs while providing clinical care, patient education, and emotional support to pediatric patients and their families within an interprofessional healthcare team.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Assessment and Care Planning
- Perform systematic patient assessment, reassessment, and collection of pertinent health data.
- Understand and analyze assessment information and data.
- Determine actual and potential nursing diagnoses, problems, and issues.
- Define predicted and expected outcomes of planned care.
- Create and evaluate patient care plans with the interprofessional team in collaboration with the patient and patient's family members.
- Perform head-to-toe assessment and reassessments on patients as per assessment policy.
- Adequately assess and reassess pain as per pain assessment policy.
Clinical Care Delivery
- Provide and coordinate patient care, educating patients and the public about health conditions.
- Provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members.
- Assess and identify patients' needs and implement and monitor the patient's medical plan and treatment.
- Record vital signs, recognize, address, and escalate all abnormalities.
- Administer medications and monitor patients for side effects and reactions.
- Administer treatments such as IV fluids or blood products and monitor patients for reactions.
- Provide wound care management.
- Assist in medical and non-invasive procedures as needed.
- Prepare patients for medical examination and treatment.
- Provide pre-operative and post-operative care of pediatric patients undergoing surgical procedures.
- Complete care and safety of allocated patients.
- Accurately monitor and record patient's condition.
- Report any abnormality in patient's condition immediately to medical staff.
- Perform routine and advanced nursing procedures and skills.
- Assist physicians with procedures and perform services requiring technical and manual skills.
Specialized Pediatric Care
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to neonates.
- Perform all aspects of nursing care for patients in the pediatric ward in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces healthcare errors.
- Demonstrate competency in taking care of phototherapy patients.
- Demonstrate competency in administration of cytotoxic drugs and care of chemotherapy patients.
- Demonstrate competency in insertion and handling of port-a-cath needle and peripheral IV line.
- Perform patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient's age.
Emergency and Life Support
- Perform essential life support as per regulatory requirements and scope including Basic Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and Neonatal Resuscitation.
- Demonstrate proficiency in emergency procedures, equipment, and protocols relevant to the department.
Patient Safety and Environment Management
- Employ strategies to promote patients' health and a safe environment.
- Facilitate safe patient admission, transfer, and discharge.
- Ensure all equipment is maintained in good working order, reporting faults to Nurse Manager or Engineering.
Professional Practice and Compliance
- Work within scope of practice at all times.
- Maintain and update technical and clinical skills related to nursing practice.
- Demonstrate competency in all mandatory and unit-specific competencies supported and assigned on Elsevier platform to ensure adherence to evidence-based practices.
- Perform all procedures as per Elsevier competencies.
- Demonstrate understanding and utilization of evidence-based healthcare.
- Participate in ongoing programs and certification to support professional growth and maintain clinical competency.
- Comply with unit scope of service.
- Manage own professional re-licensure.
- Document on patient record as per current standards and policies.
Professional Responsibilities
- Demonstrate excellent observation skills, think critically, and make quick and effective decisions.
- Organize assigned duties.
- Function efficiently in patient care within the unit and relieve other nursing units in the hospital if necessary.
- Be willing to work across departments and on call when necessary.
Qualifications & Experience
- Hold an appropriate license to work as a registered nurse in the relevant regulatory health authority with all qualifications and experience mandated by that authority.
- Hold a valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider card.
