Registered Nurse - OT

Role Overview

Registered Nurse - OT at NMC Healthcare. This role provides direct patient care in the operating theatre environment, coordinating care delivery, patient education, and clinical support across the perioperative pathway.

Role Purpose

To deliver safe, high-quality perioperative nursing care by assessing patient needs, implementing and monitoring treatment plans, performing life support procedures, and facilitating surgical processes in collaboration with the interprofessional team.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Assessment & Care Planning

• Perform systematic patient assessment, re-assessment, and collect pertinent data about the patient's health and situation.
• Understand and analyze assessment information and data.
• Determine actual and potential nursing diagnoses, problems, and issues.
• Define the predicted and expected outcomes of the patient's planned care.
• Create and evaluate patient care plans with the interprofessional team, in collaboration with the patient and patient's bystanders.
• Assess and identify patients' needs and implement and monitor the patient's medical plan and treatment.

Patient Care & Education

• Provide and coordinate patient care, educating patients and the public about various health conditions.
• Provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members.
• Employ strategies to promote patients' health and a safe environment.
• Prepare patients for medical examination and treatment.

Clinical Monitoring & Vital Signs

• Record vital signs, recognize, address and escalate all abnormalities.
• Monitor patients' vital signs in the pre-operative area and post-operative recovery room.

Medication & Treatment Administration

• Administer medications and monitor patients for any side effects and reactions.
• Administer treatments such as IV fluids or blood products and monitor patients for any reactions.
• Provide wound care management.

Life Support & Emergency Care

• Perform essential life support as per regulatory requirements and scope, such as Basic Life Support, Paediatric Advanced Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, and Neonatal Resuscitation.

Diagnostic & Laboratory Support

• Understand different diagnostic tests and laboratory examinations.
• Assist in medical procedures, invasive or non-invasive, as needed.

Clinical Skills & Professional Development

• Maintain and update technical and clinical skills related to nursing practice.

Perioperative Processes

• Facilitate all perioperative processes safely.
• Adhere to operating room attire according to policy and procedure.
• Use appropriate personal protective equipment and safety systems.
• Prepare room and assemble instruments and equipment based on patient's surgical needs.
• Demonstrate knowledge of aseptic technique.
• Correctly identify patient and surgical site.
• Check thoroughly the pre-operative checklist of patient, including completion of required diagnostic and laboratory procedures.
• Position patient with the use of positional aids, maintaining circulatory, respiratory, and neuromuscular homeostasis while maintaining privacy and providing maximum exposure to the operative procedure.
• Demonstrate skill in performing the duties of scrub nurse and circulating nurse.
• Provide safety to patient, to self, and the whole surgical team by adopting safety protocols such as Time Out.
• Count surgical items audibly, and view items concurrently with another individual when counting, recognizing that one of the individuals performing the count should be the RN circulator.
• Recognize that, when possible, surgical counts during a procedure should be performed by the same two individuals.

Team Collaboration

• Work with a team of physicians, other health care specialists, and allied health professionals in various settings.
• Be willing to work across departments when necessary.

Qualifications & Experience

• Hold an appropriate license to work as a registered nurse in the relevant regulatory health authority with all qualifications and experience these mandates require.
• Hold a valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider card.
• Hold a valid ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) card.

Skills & Competencies

• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English, both spoken and written.
• Ability to work as part of an inter-professional team.
• Organizational and administrative skills for use of the electronic medical record platform for clinical documentation.
• Ability to communicate effectively in Arabic (desirable).

Additional Information

• Post holder must manage their own professional re-licensure.
